Wind Creek Chicago Southland has been awarded the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification, acknowledging its commitment to sustainable building practices. The certification, granted by the US Green Building Council (USGBC), highlights the casino's use of efficient design and low-emitting construction materials to reduce ecological impact.
The casino, which began construction in 2022 and opened in 2024, was developed on a high-priority site that repurposed previously used land, minimising environmental disruption. Key features include advanced water metering, green power initiatives, and carbon offset programmes, all aimed at reducing resource consumption and emissions. Additionally, heat island reduction strategies have been implemented to prevent localised temperature increases.
Peter Templeton, President and CEO of USGBC, stated, "The work of innovative building projects like Wind Creek Chicago Southland is a fundamental driving force in transforming the way our buildings are built and operated." He emphasised that LEED-certified buildings lower carbon emissions, reduce operating costs, and conserve resources whilst prioritising sustainable practices and human health.
Brent Pinkston, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at Wind Creek Hospitality, remarked, "This recognition speaks to how we're investing in the Southland by not only creating a destination but also supporting a sustainable future for the places our Team Members and Guests call home."
