Wuxi’s musical tour enchants Europe

Wuxi, recently named a UNESCO Creative City of Music, has completed a groundbreaking two-week musical tour across Europe. The tour, which began on 14 February, featured an 80-member ensemble from the Wuxi Cultural Exchange Group performing in Belgium, Germany, Austria, and Hungary. This marks Wuxi's most significant international outreach since its UNESCO designation in 2025.

The tour, titled the Chinese Folk Music Odyssey, opened at the Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels, captivating a full house of 2,000 with performances like the "Spring Festival Overture." The ensemble's use of traditional Chinese instruments created an auditory "Jiangnan Scroll," culminating in a moving finale where Chinese fiddles and local keyed violins performed "Horse Racing." This fusion of Eastern and Western strings received standing ovations and was described by Belgian music critic Philippe as "a truly borderless musical exchange."

Beyond concert halls, the group engaged with European pop culture, notably in Brussels' Comic Strip district. A flash mob performance, "Tintin's Encounter with Jiangnan Music," saw musicians interacting with local youth amidst iconic murals, creating a social media-friendly cultural exchange.

The tour continued through Germany's prestigious venues, including Hamburg's Elbphilharmonie, and concluded in Vienna on 26 February. In Vienna, the ensemble hosted the "Dreamy Jiangnan" cultural salon at the Wiener Konzerthaus, combining musical performances with exhibitions of Wuxi's intangible cultural heritage. The tour also included academic exchanges at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, fostering deeper cultural understanding and strengthening musical ties between East and West.

By integrating the "Voice of China" into the "World Symphony," the Wuxi Cultural Exchange Group has opened a new chapter in Wuxi's global musical engagement
