SpiceRoads, the Asian bicycle tour operator, has joined a global campaign to improve elephant welfare in the tourism industry.
This month, the company signed World Animal Protection’s “elephant-friendly tourism pledge”, committing it to offer elephant experiences from only those operators that achieve a high standard of elephant welfare and conservation.
This includes responsible viewing of elephants in wild or semi-wild habitats, and no elephant shows or rides.
“As a specialised niche bicycle tour operator since 2000, SpiceRoads has been committed to responsible tourism, because we acknowledge that while tourism provides locals with income to improve their standard of living, it can also affect their culture and environment,” said Daniel Moylan, general manager of SpiceRoads.
“Apart from that we are proud to say that we do not condone the use of animal captivity for profit, this includes tiger petting zoos, elephant shows and elephant riding.”
SpiceRoads becomes one of more than 100 travel companies worldwide who have signed World Animal Protection’s pledge to stop elephant rides and shows.
