MedStar Health has unveiled its latest addition to the MedSTAR Transport fleet, the Airbus H145 D3 helicopter, aimed at boosting critical care transport capabilities across Washington DC and Maryland. This advanced aircraft is designed to cater to patients with complex medical needs, offering significant clinical and operational improvements.

The Airbus H145 D3 features a substantially larger cabin, allowing for more patient care equipment and additional clinicians when necessary. It can accommodate two stretchers, providing flexibility in extraordinary response scenarios. The helicopter's increased payload capacity of 1,000 pounds supports personnel, medical equipment, and fuel requirements, enhancing mission flexibility.

With a five-blade rotor system, the helicopter offers greater lift and a smoother ride, crucial for critically ill patients and medical crews. Its more powerful engines improve performance in challenging conditions, such as high heat and humidity. The aircraft is also equipped to handle highly specialised care, including neonatal intensive care and ECMO (a temporary heart-lung support system).

MedSTAR Transport, established in 1983, was the first hospital-based air medical service in the Washington area. It has since evolved into a comprehensive regional transport system, moving approximately 5,000 patients annually. The programme has been pivotal in regional and national emergency responses, including during major events like 9/11 and the COVID-19 pandemic.

The introduction of the Airbus H145 D3 marks a significant step in MedStar Health's ongoing commitment to providing advanced medical transport solutions, ensuring critically ill patients receive timely and effective care.
