The recent Golden Week holidays in China led to a surge in the number of travellers taking long-haul trips, new data has revealed.
GTA released a report this week showing that Auckland saw a ten-fold jump in room bookings during this month’s Golden Week, while Melbourne, Sydney, Cairns and Perth all saw their room bookings triple in size. In Europe, Denmark and Sweden also saw strong performances, with both countries tripling the number of room nights booked.
The top five destinations in the US were Los Angeles, Las Vegas, New York, Chicago and San Francisco, while London, Paris, Rome, Florence, Milan and Madrid were the top European cities visited.
Globally, Hong Kong and Singapore were the top two destinations, followed by Phuket, which was the top beach destination. Room bookings in Phuket doubled from 2014. Other Thai beach destinations including Koh Samui and Krabi also saw strong room bookings during Golden Week.
“Despite initial concerns of China outbound tourism being affected by the weak economic situation and devaluated yuan, GTA’s average sales revenue and volume has almost doubled from last year, with outstanding growths in some new destinations, demonstrating that Chinese travellers are continuing to travel abroad, many seeking exotic beach holidays, or choosing to venture further during their Golden Week holiday,” said Daryl Lee, GTA’s regional vice president of sales & marketing for Asia Pacific, Middle East & Africa.
Destinations in Japan showed the largest growth in terms of Chinese tourism revenue, with Tokyo, Osaka, and
Okinawa all experiencing a huge increase in room bookings. And “new” destinations capitalising on the Chinese outbound boom, according to GTA, included Mexico, Fiji, Negombo in Sri Lanka and Mauritius.
