According to Dr. Sunil Khetarpal, Director of the Association of Healthcare Providers (India), "A unified national policy is essential to provide a standardized experience for international patients. India's medical tourism sector is highly fragmented, with six ministries and multiple sectors involved."
Speaking at the session on ‘Transforming Medical Tourism: Policies, Standards, and the Power of Innovation’ during the “Heal in India - Medical and Wellness Tourism Summit 2025” organised by the FHRAI, Dr. Khetarpal further emphasized the need for policy frameworks similar to NABH, aligned with global models like the German TIMO standard, which is followed by 14 countries.

To truly capitalize on medical tourism, we must elevate standards for all patients, regardless of their origin, and establish 'India' as a trusted and renowned healthcare destination.
Prof. M. Bajpai, Vice President of the National Board of Examinations and Former Dean (Academic) at AIIMS, underscored the critical need for patient-centric systems. Timely and accessible emergency care is the top priority for patients, regardless of their origin. A unified electronic medical record system is essential to ensure seamless care and transparency. Additionally, Prof. Bajpai emphasized the importance of strategic outreach to SAARC nations through collaborative hospital partnerships and telemedicine networks, fostering trusted entry points into India's healthcare system.
Madhusudan Chauhan, CEO of Jiva Ayurveda and Board Director of Ayushexcil, highlighted the imperative to define the role of AYUSH in medical tourism with clarity. To remain competitive, we must substantiate our therapies with quantifiable outcomes, aligning with the global demand for evidence-based care, he added

The summit featured international perspectives from H.E. Mr. Aruńkoemar Hardien, Ambassador of the Embassy of Suriname, who spoke about public-private partnerships and medical sector investments.
Lalatiana Accouche, High Commissioner of the Republic of Seychelles, shared that Seychelles attracts a large volume of tourists and is keen on collaborating with Indian healthcare providers.
Dr. Mohammed Hashim Hasoun Al-Jefery, Health Attaché of the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq, highlighted India's popularity among Iraqi patients.
The summit also spotlighted wellness destinations contributing to India's growing stature as a wellness destination.
