Azores Airlines, part of the SATA Group, has become the latest airline to join the New Terminal One at John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK), strengthening connections between New York and the Azores islands. The airline will offer nonstop flights from the New Terminal One to Ponta Delgada, with further connections available across the Azores, Madeira, mainland Portugal, and major European cities.
The New Terminal One is a significant part of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey's $19 billion (£15 billion) transformation of JFK into a world-class gateway. This project includes the development of two new terminals, the modernisation and expansion of existing terminals, a new ground transportation centre, and a simplified roadway network. The terminal aims to set a new standard for design and service, aspiring for a top 5-star Skytrax rating.
Jennifer Aument, CEO of the New Terminal One at JFK, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, "We are thrilled to welcome Azores Airlines to the New Terminal One and to strengthen New York's connection with the Azores." Rui Miguel Furtado Coutinho, President of SATA Group, added, "Joining The New Terminal One is an important milestone for Azores Airlines and for the communities we serve."
Scheduled to open its first gates in 2026, the New Terminal One will become JFK's largest terminal, featuring state-of-the-art technology, modern amenities, and sustainable design. Azores Airlines joins a growing list of international carriers at the terminal, including Air France, KLM, Etihad, and Turkish Airlines. The full completion of the terminal is expected by 2030, with a total of 23 gates across 2.6 million square feet.
