Sydney has officially opened its new Fish Market, a landmark development on Sydney Harbour that promises to become a major tourist attraction alongside the Opera House and Harbour Bridge. The Minns Labour Government's project, which opened on Monday, is anticipated to attract more than six million visitors each year, doubling the footfall of its predecessor.
The state-of-the-art facility combines retail, dining, and education under a roof inspired by fish scales. It offers double the retail space of the old market, featuring 40 food and retail operators, from casual takeaways to premium waterfront restaurants. The market also boasts modern facilities for wholesalers, including ice-making systems producing over 50,000 kilograms of ice daily, live crustacean tanks, and a public auction room.

Premier of New South Wales Chris Minns highlighted the market's potential to boost tourism, jobs, and spending, stating, “The old fish market attracted around three million visitors a year, and we expect this new one to double that.” The site will be supported by enhanced public transport options, including a new ferry wharf and metro station at Pyrmont.

Minister for Agriculture Tara Moriarty emphasised the market's role in supporting over 1,000 small family businesses in the seafood industry. Meanwhile, Minister for Lands and Property Steve Kamper described it as a "must-visit destination" set to achieve global recognition.

Sydney Fish Market CEO Daniel Jarosch declared, “Sydney can proudly lay claim to the best fish market in the world,” underscoring its appeal as a multi-layered destination for both locals and tourists.
