The city also tops the list for domestic travel within Malaysia. As the festive season approaches, Agoda's data highlights Kuala Lumpur's appeal, with its blend of modernity and tradition, as a prime location for international visitors.
The Malaysian capital, along with Johor Bahru and Penang, is attracting a growing number of travellers interested in cultural heritage and urban experiences. Johor Bahru is noted for its cultural landmarks, whilst Penang is celebrated for its historic architecture and street food. These destinations reflect a trend towards exploring local culture and history.
For Malaysians travelling abroad, Bangkok, Thailand, emerges as the top choice, followed by Hat Yai and Tokyo. Bangkok's vibrant street life and cultural sites offer a dynamic urban adventure, whilst Hat Yai provides a more relaxed yet culturally immersive experience. Tokyo appeals with its mix of tradition and modernity.

Agoda is offering significant discounts on travel bookings during its Mega Sale from 14 to 28 February, with up to 70% off on select dates.
Agoda's findings also reveal that Japanese cities are popular among Asian travellers for the Lunar New Year, with Tokyo leading the list, followed by Bangkok, Taipei, Osaka, and Seoul. The data was collected from searches conducted in December 2025 for check-ins in February 2026.
