We look into how Malaysia has risen through the ranks to become the world’s destination of choice

As of Wednesday, 20th May, Malaysia has become the most-visited nation in Southeast Asia, welcoming 10.6 million global travellers throughout Q1-2026.

The total is up five percent from the same period last year and is proof of the country’s steady growth as a global destination even as its regional neighbours have been reporting mixed results.

This rise is attributed to the success of the country’s long running Malaysia Truly Asia campaign, as well as the aggressive marketing of the Visit Malaysia Year 2026 initiative throughout the globe.

But more than mere marketing and advertising, Malaysia has been steadily working on improving its tourism infrastructure throughout the pandemic and post-pandemic eras.

In today’s feature, we delve into Malaysia’s rise to the top as a tourism powerhouse and the factors propelling its success.

Malaysia by the numbers

In January of this year, Malaysia was referred to as the tourism success story of Southeast Asia as it surpassed pre-pandemic arrivals numbers by 20.4 percent as of end-2025, closing the year with 42.2 million foreign visitors.

It is worth noting that the country’s tourism sector experienced a major rebound in the past year, earning total gross revenues of around US$32 billion.

With regard to source markets, Singapore still leads the list, sending over 11.87 million visitors over the past year.

Indonesia comes in second with 4.09 million; Thailand in third with 2.82 million, China in the fourth spot at 2.69 million; and Brunei taking fifth place with 1.39 million.

Aside from the top five source markets, Malaysian tourism has also seen strong recovery in the numbers from India, South Korea, Taiwan, the UK, and Australia.

The Malaysian playbook

Malaysia is well known for its impressive landscapes, rich cultural heritage, excellent culinary scene, and has also developed a reputation for its world-class MICE facilities in recent years.

But more than any of these, Malaysia has made it a point to consider the specific needs of global travellers.

In which case, the following factors have worked to its advantage:

  • Streamlined entry for foreign nationals In recent years, Malaysia has simplified its entry process for foreigners, thereby making itself more accessible as it welcomes a wider range of travellers than any of its regional neighbours;
  • Overall affordability At the same time, travelling to Malaysia is a surprisingly cost-effective travel experience for global travellers, seeing how its exchange rate to the US dollar and other currencies gives them significant spending power and even its best hotels offer reasonable rates, making it a great destination for both budget and luxury tourists;
  • Linguistic proficiency and overall professionalism Much like the Philippines, many Malaysians speak very good English, and some have forayed into fluency in Mandarin Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and several South Asian dialects to help travellers seeking assistance. Also, street signs have English translations displayed prominently and tourism professionals in the country are among the best-trained in the world; and
  • Overall stability Malaysia takes pride in both its political stability as well as the way it has upgraded its public transport and tourism infrastructure over the past several years. At the same time, recently ratified business-friendly policies have also boosted the travel experience for many visitors and will continue to do so for years to come.
