Florida is gearing up for the 250th anniversary of the United States with a series of celebrations and a new docuseries, "America 250: A Portrait of Florida." The initiative, spearheaded by VISIT FLORIDA, aims to highlight the state's significant contributions to American history. The seven-episode docuseries, which explores key locations such as St Augustine, Pensacola, and Cape Canaveral, is available online, with new episodes releasing through June.
Bryan Griffin, President and CEO of VISIT FLORIDA, emphasised the state's rich history of exploration and innovation, inviting visitors to explore Florida's historic sites, museums, and landmarks. "Florida is all-in on celebrating America 250 and we invite everyone to visit our state and experience history," he stated.
Among the local events, St Augustine, the oldest continuously occupied city in the US, offers the St Augustine America 250 Celebration. Pensacola, known as America's First Settlement, features the Americas First Settlement Trail and the Pensacola Museum of History. Tallahassee hosts The George Washington Experience at the Florida Historic Capitol Museum, whilst the Kennedy Space Centre on Florida's Space Coast will present a drone show narrating the story of independence on 3 July.
Statewide initiatives include the America250FL Golf Trail and the America250FL Road Trip, encouraging visitors to engage with Florida's historical landmarks. The Founding Father statue series will also see new monuments erected in counties named after American founders.
