British holidaymakers are increasingly choosing flight-free travel options amid rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. A recent survey conducted by Travel Uni, in partnership with Discover Ferries, reveals a significant shift in travel preferences, with many opting for destinations closer to home to avoid potential disruptions and price hikes associated with air travel.
The survey, which included over 800 travel agents and tour operators across the UK, highlights a growing trend towards European destinations and staycations within the British Isles. Notably, 78% of respondents reported increased interest in closer-to-home travel, whilst 39% noted a rise in staycations. Additionally, 37% of travel operatives observed a heightened interest in ferry and rail travel, as consumers seek to avoid flights.
Abby Penlington, Director of Discover Ferries, commented on the trend, stating, “The disruption affecting international air travel this Spring is still firmly in holidaymakers’ minds when they are choosing what to book for the summer.” She added that ferry travel offers a reliable alternative, providing access to over 80 destinations from UK ports without the stress of airport bottlenecks and fuel price instability.
The survey also indicates that 89% of respondents noted increased traveller concerns over flight cancellations, whilst 87% were worried about fuel surcharges. This uncertainty has led to a shift in booking behaviour, with 74% of agents observing that travellers are waiting closer to departure dates to finalise their plans.
Ian Dockreay, CEO of Equator Global and Travel Uni, emphasised the importance of understanding these shifts, noting that the findings provide valuable insights into consumer behaviour during times of economic and geopolitical uncertainty. As the travel industry adapts, agents are encouraged to leverage these insights to offer value and peace of mind to holidaymakers seeking closer-to-home options
