Saudi Arabia's flag carrier Saudia is taking esports beyond stadiums and onto the runway after unveiling what it says is the world's first commercial aircraft dedicated to an esports event, marking a new chapter in the growing convergence of aviation, tourism and gaming. The specially branded aircraft forms part of an expanded partnership between Saudia and the Esports World Cup Foundation, which has named the airline the Official Airline of the Esports World Cup 2026. As the tournament heads to Paris for its first international edition, the aircraft will operate daily services between Riyadh and the French capital before continuing across Saudia's international network for the next two years, effectively turning every flight into a flying ambassador for one of the world's biggest gaming events.

The collaboration goes well beyond the aircraft itself. Saudia is playing a central role in transporting players, esports clubs, tournament officials, content creators and thousands of fans between Saudi Arabia and France, while also bringing the tournament experience into the passenger journey. Travellers flying with the airline will be able to watch Esports World Cup: Level Up through Saudia's BEYOND inflight entertainment platform, while selected live tournament broadcasts will also be screened across the airline's lounges during the competition.

The carrier said it has already flown thousands of players, tournament staff, creators and selected superfans to Paris ahead of the competition, with many more expected to travel throughout the tournament. Through the Esports World Cup Superfan programme, selected gaming enthusiasts have been given the opportunity to attend the event in person, while creators from across the Middle East and North Africa are producing on-the-ground coverage for regional audiences. The partnership also extends into the virtual world. Building on last year's successful Fortnite activation, Saudia is launching a new community tournament featuring a custom-built map inspired by the airline's branded airport and esports-themed aircraft. Winners will receive tickets to attend the Esports World Cup in Paris, further connecting online gaming communities with the live event.

For Saudi Arabia, the initiative represents another example of how the Kingdom is increasingly blending tourism, aviation, entertainment and sport to build global visibility. Rather than simply sponsoring an event, Saudia is integrating the tournament into almost every stage of the traveller experience, from the moment passengers see the aircraft on the tarmac to the content they consume during their journey.

"This partnership reflects the global reach and cultural impact esports has today," said François Désir, Director of Sponsorship and Advertising at the Esports Foundation. "From the world's first commercial aircraft dedicated to an esports event to onboard programming and fan experiences, our partnership allows us to extend the tournament experience well beyond the competition itself."

Ibrahim Binaquil, Marketing Head at Saudia Group, said the collaboration demonstrates how the airline is using major international events to connect people while showcasing Saudi Arabia's evolving tourism and entertainment landscape. "The Esports World Cup reflects Saudi Arabia's growing role in bringing people together through world-class experiences that resonate with audiences around the globe," he said. "As the Kingdom's national flag carrier, our role extends beyond travel to connecting people with experiences that create lasting memories and strengthen cultural exchange."

The renewed partnership builds on last year's Esports World Cup in Riyadh, which attracted more than three million visitors and established the tournament as one of the Kingdom's flagship entertainment events. This year's edition is expected to welcome more than 2,000 professional players representing over 200 clubs from more than 100 countries, competing across 24 games and 25 tournaments for a record prize pool exceeding US$75 million.

As airlines increasingly look beyond traditional sponsorships to engage younger travellers, Saudia's esports-themed aircraft highlights how aviation brands are embracing gaming as both a marketing platform and a way to create richer travel experiences. For Saudi Arabia, it is another high-profile showcase of the Kingdom's ambitions to position itself as a global hub for tourism, sport, entertainment and digital culture.
