The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is transforming the 125th Ubon Ratchathani Candle Procession into a Signature Thailand Event, aiming to enhance its international appeal. Scheduled from 25–31 July at Thung Si Mueang, the festival will feature a blend of traditional and contemporary elements, with the main events occurring from 28–30 July.
Rooted in the Buddhist Lent tradition, the procession is a testament to faith and craftsmanship, involving temple communities, candle masters, and local stakeholders. TAT Governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool stated, “TAT is giving this living heritage a stronger platform by pairing its cultural foundations with contemporary presentation and meaningful participation.”
The event is part of TAT's strategy to elevate regional celebrations, alongside the Nakhon Phanom Illuminated Boat Procession and the Christmas Star Parade in Sakon Nakhon. This approach aims to strengthen Thailand’s cultural soft power and attract international audiences.
Highlights include lighting installations at Thung Si Mueang, four nightly light-and-sound performances on 29 and 30 July, and two large-scale sculptures of ‘Nong Mamuang’ at Lan Thian Chaloem Phra Kiat. The ART SPACE will offer hands-on activities like candle carving and gold-leaf decoration.
The main events feature a candle gathering on 28 July, a parade on 29 July, and an official opening on 30 July. Over 37 dance troupes will participate, with more than 5,000 complimentary seats available at key viewing points. Award-winning candles will be displayed until 1 August, with additional activities running throughout the month
