Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, has entered into a strategic partnership with Africa World Airlines, a Ghana-based carrier, to expand their networks and services. The Memorandum of Understanding, signed in Accra, outlines plans for codeshare and interline cooperation, cargo collaboration, and frequent flyer programme integration. This agreement will enable Etihad passengers to travel seamlessly on a single ticket beyond Accra to destinations across Ghana and West Africa, whilst Africa World Airlines' customers gain access to Etihad's extensive network of 118 destinations via Abu Dhabi.
The partnership also aims to bolster cargo services, connecting Ghanaian and West African exporters with Etihad Cargo's global capacity. Additionally, loyalty programme members from both airlines will have more opportunities to earn and redeem points. This collaboration comes as trade and travel between Ghana and the UAE continue to grow, with a direct commercial link between Accra and Abu Dhabi seen as a natural progression.
The Memorandum of Understanding takes effect from 24 July 2026, with phased implementation of the cooperation areas. Etihad's own Abu Dhabi–Accra service is set to launch on 24 March 2027, with combined journeys available for sale once interline cooperation begins. Arik De, Chief Commercial and Revenue Officer of Etihad Airways, highlighted Ghana's dynamic aviation market, stating, “We are here to grow with Ghana.” Sohail Mahmood, Chief Operating Officer of Africa World Airlines, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, noting the benefits for Ghanaian travellers and international businesses. Further details on the cooperation will be announced as they are implemented
