Singapore may still be the overall leader when it comes to events within the region, but the neighbours are stepping up their game

As Singapore opens the doors to the Singapore MICE Forum by way of the Association MICE Forum later today, 29th July, it cannot be disputed that the city-state continues to lead the way in terms of the regional event and incentive travel sector.

However, regional neighbours are beginning to sit up and take stock of their own MICE infrastructure and related travel products.

This is timely in the face of current realities, especially with organisational and staging costs rising by up to 50 percent as of press time, organisers are looking to other countries that could offer a more reasonably priced alternative.

In this feature, we highlight these nations and look into what they can offer potential clients.

Four possible contenders

Thailand

Thailand has long been a dominant player in the regional tourism scene and now stands to be a major contender when it comes to MICE, specifically in Bangkok and Phuket.

This may be attributed to the country’s position as one of Asia’s leading industrial gateways thanks to a strong manufacturing base, as well as government policies in favour of the business community.

The rapid growth of its aviation sector has also helped as major events and mega-incentives are making their way into the country.

Furthermore, when it comes to the luxury incentive scene, the country’s resort hubs Phuket and Pattaya offer exceptional experiences at a fraction of the cost of a Singapore trip.

Hong Kong

As a MICE destination, Hong Kong offers a compelling argument to shift in its favour: access to the massive markets in Mainland China.

Thanks to its proximity to mainland markets, this small autonomous region could give Singapore a run for its money as it goes head to head in terms of events centred around finance, trade, and innovation.

At the same time, Hong Kong has been aggressive in terms of infrastructural development as it competes for premium, large-scale global trade events requiring significant financial outlay and trade-free integration.

Malaysia

The Malaysian Convention and Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB) actively targets corporate function and tech conference organizers who want a more reasonably priced alternative to Singaporean venues and accommodations.

While much of the activity is centred in Kuala Lumpur and Borneo, organisers have been touting Penang and Kota Kinabalu as emergent destinations.

This shift to lesser-known cities expands the reach of the country’s MICE sector and also shows off the government’s extensive push for green credentials, developing unique incentive environments that also highlight ecotourism.

Indonesia

We recently reported how Indonesia is ramping up its MICE infrastructure.

It is also interesting to note that, while the capital now boasts of several new MICE venues, event organisers are also casting the spotlight on lesser-known destinations.

Bali, in particular, has become the darling of those organising mid-size conferences of up to 500 delegates.

By doing so, Indonesia presents itself an extensive ecosystem of cultural experiences and ecological venues that are highly attractive for corporate wellness and incentive travel programs
