Business leaders from across New Zealand are set to converge in Queenstown on 28 August for a pivotal event focused on biosecurity. Co-hosted by the Biosecurity Business Pledge, Queenstown Airport, and New Zealand Winegrowers, the Biosecurity Leadership Event aims to highlight the crucial role organisations play in safeguarding the nation's natural and economic assets.
The event will kick off with an exclusive tour of Queenstown Airport's biosecurity areas, providing attendees with a rare glimpse into the frontline systems that protect New Zealand from invasive pests and diseases. Following this, participants will learn about local efforts to manage wilding pines and preserve biodiversity, culminating in a leadership discussion at Mora Wines & Artisan Kitchen.
Key speakers include Queenstown Airport's Chief of Aviation & Customer, Todd Grace, Director-General of Biosecurity New Zealand, Stuart Anderson, and NZ Winegrowers’ Biosecurity Adviser, Tim Towers. Grace emphasised the importance of biosecurity, stating, “Biosecurity isn't just an issue for border agencies. It has implications for tourism, trade, the environment, and the economy.”
The event will also launch new procurement guidance to help businesses enhance biosecurity resilience. Debbie Teale, Executive Director of the Biosecurity Business Pledge, noted, “Strong biosecurity depends on everyone working together. No single organisation can protect New Zealand alone.”
The Queenstown Biosecurity Leadership Event is free, but spaces are limited, requiring prior registration. This initiative is part of Biosecurity Awareness Month, underscoring the collective responsibility in protecting New Zealand's unique environment and way of life
