The North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) is set to welcome visitors for Heritage Open Days 2026, offering a unique glimpse into its historical and operational facets. From 11 to 20 September, the railway will host a series of free events across Pickering, Goathland, and Grosmont, allowing attendees to explore typically inaccessible areas, meet dedicated volunteers and staff, and delve into the railway's rich history through exhibitions, guided tours, and interactive demonstrations.
A standout feature of this year's programme is the "Living Histories: A Dive into the Archive" exhibition at Pickering Station from 14 to 16 September. This exhibition will showcase archive materials from the railway's mainline years to its present-day preservation efforts. Visitors can also partake in station tours at Pickering, Goathland, and Grosmont, each offering a unique historical perspective, including Goathland's fame as Hogsmeade Station in the first Harry Potter film.
Additional highlights include the Motive Power Depot Walking Shed Tour on 12 and 13 September, where visitors can witness locomotive restoration and maintenance. Signal Box Demonstrations at Pickering Station will provide insights into the crucial role of Signallers, with opportunities to try changing a signal and using the token machine.
Rhiannon Hope, Learning and Interpretation Lead at NYMR, expressed enthusiasm for the event, stating, "Heritage Open Days is a wonderful opportunity to share the stories that make the North Yorkshire Moors Railway so special."
Heritage Open Days is the UK's largest festival of history and culture, supported by the National Trust and Postcode Lottery players. Many activities are available on a drop-in basis, whilst selected tours can be reserved by registering interest via the NYMR website
