Uttar Pradesh (UP) and Yamanashi Prefecture in Japan have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance tourism cooperation, focusing on the Buddhist Circuit as a key area of connectivity. The agreement, signed in the presence of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, aims to leverage the cultural and spiritual ties between the regions to boost tourism and hospitality sectors.

The initiative, announced during the UP-Japan Investment Meet 2026 in Lucknow, seeks to position Yamanashi as a gateway for Japanese tourists to UP. Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh highlighted the transformation in UP's approach to Buddhist tourism since 2017, emphasising improved connectivity and visitor experiences. "Yamanashi can play an important role in connecting Japanese tourists with the Buddhist and spiritual destinations of Uttar Pradesh," he stated.

The MoU outlines plans for joint promotional campaigns, knowledge exchange, and the development of religious and cultural tourism routes. It also includes efforts to raise awareness about UNESCO World Heritage sites like Sarnath in UP and Fujisan in Japan.

Additional Chief Secretary Amrit Abhijat noted UP's appeal to investors due to its cultural heritage and economic growth. The state recorded a significant increase in tourist numbers, with over 81.8 lakh visitors in 2025, including 4.43 lakh foreign tourists.
