InterContinental Phuket Resort earns GSTC certification

InterContinental Phuket Resort has become the first InterContinental hotel in Thailand to achieve the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) certification. This accolade marks the resort as the third IHG Hotels & Resorts property in Thailand to receive this internationally recognised sustainability certification.

The GSTC certification, independently audited by Control Union Certifications, evaluates sustainable tourism practices across four key areas: sustainable management, socioeconomic impacts, cultural impacts, and environmental impacts. Bjorn Courage, General Manager of InterContinental Phuket Resort, stated, “GSTC Certification is significant because it independently validates the actions our team has been building into the resort for many years.”

The resort's sustainability efforts include innovative food-waste management, such as the Oklin Food Waste Composter, which processes up to 125 kilograms of food waste daily, converting it into nutrient-rich fertiliser. This fertiliser supports local organisations and the resort's gardens. Additionally, AI-powered monitoring helps culinary teams reduce waste by refining portion sizes and inventory management.

Beyond its premises, the resort engages in the Proud Kamala initiative, maintaining the cleanliness of Kamala Beach and supporting local employment. Offshore, the Ocean For All Foundation's “License to Clean” catamaran collects waste from surrounding waters, contributing to marine conservation.

InterContinental Phuket Resort's commitment to sustainability extends to its culinary practices, collaborating with local farms to source ingredients and create zero-waste cocktails. This holistic approach reflects the resort's belief that luxury and sustainability can coexist, setting a new standard for sustainable hospitality in Phuket and beyond.
