Singaporeans are increasingly facing financial tensions when travelling in groups, with one in three saying they have argued over money after a trip, according to a survey commissioned by multi-currency digital wallet provider YouTrip. The survey of 1,000 Singaporeans found that 21% had vowed never to travel with the same group again following disagreements over expenses. Late repayments, incorrect calculations and disputes over how costs should be divided were among the main sources of friction. The findings also highlight the pressure placed on the person responsible for managing group expenses, often informally known as the “accountant”. Nearly half of those taking on the role said they spend more than a day settling expenses after returning from a trip. Sending payment reminders was cited as a particular source of social discomfort, with 54% of respondents identifying it as a key concern.

A gap between those tracking and paying expenses

The survey found a notable difference between the concerns of those managing group expenses and those settling their share after a trip.

For the “accountants”, the main concerns included sending awkward payment reminders (54%), losing personal money because of inaccurate expense tracking (53%) and sorting receipts (47%).

Among “post-trip payers”, the leading concerns were being charged unfavourable foreign exchange rates (58%), having no real-time visibility into group spending (58%) and being overcharged (45%).

Payment reminders also revealed a gap between the two groups. While 62% of accountants said they were concerned about the awkwardness of sending reminders, only 40% of post-trip payers identified them as a concern.

YouTrip said the findings prompted the launch of YouTrip Split, a new feature within its app designed to simplify the management of shared travel expenses.

The feature allows users to track group spending, automate expense calculations and manage expenses across currencies without manually converting each transaction. Users can settle their share in Singapore dollars or the original currency.

“YouTrip Split is designed to change that by bringing the tracking, splitting, and settling of group expenses into one app,” said Kelvin Lam, Chief Operating Officer of YouTrip.

To mark the launch, YouTrip is also offering a promotion under which selected groups can have their travel expenses covered, capped at S$5,000 (US$3,650) per group.

The initiative comes as travel groups increasingly rely on digital tools to manage shared spending across currencies, while avoiding the calculations and payment reminders that can create friction after a trip.
