Air New Zealand is set to enhance its flight capacity between Shanghai and Auckland by adding more than 7,000 seats during the Chinese New Year period. From 23 January to 20 February 2027, the airline will introduce three additional return services per week, increasing the total to ten weekly flights. This move comes in response to heightened demand during one of the busiest travel seasons for Chinese visitors to New Zealand.
The airline's Chief Commercial Officer, Scott Wilkinson, highlighted the strategic decision to increase capacity on this route, stating, “We’re being deliberate about where we add capacity, and Shanghai at this time of year is a fantastic opportunity.” The additional flights are expected to facilitate easier access for visitors to experience New Zealand's summer and support local tourism and businesses.
Moreover, the increased flights will provide more cargo space, aiding New Zealand exporters in reaching Chinese markets. Wilkinson also noted the benefits for outbound travellers from New Zealand, offering more options for those visiting family in China or travelling further afield.
Air New Zealand's partnership with Air China further enhances connectivity, with up to 24 weekly services between New Zealand and China during peak seasons. This alliance allows access to over 30 destinations across China via Beijing and Shanghai, ensuring travellers have ample choice and connectivity
