Anak Krakatau, the Indonesian volcano situated in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra islands, erupted 12 times on Sunday, spewing hot ash and debris into the atmosphere. The Jakarta Post reported the local volcano monitoring station as saying that said volcanic tremors from the volcano had reached 5.6 on the Richter scale. A 2km safety zone has been put in place around the crater, but no casualties have been reported
Literally translated as the ‘Child of Krakatoa’, Anak Krakatau was created following the devastating eruption of Krakatoa in 1883, which killed more than 40,000 people and produced what is believed to be the loudest sound ever recorded.
