Austrian Airlines has launched its first flight equipped with Starlink high-speed internet, marking a significant step in its fleet modernisation. The inaugural flight of the Airbus A320neo, registered as OELXF, departed for Porto, offering passengers the fastest in-flight internet connection available. By the end of the 2026–27 winter schedule, 20 aircraft will feature Lufthansa Group WiFi powered by Starlink, according to Austrian Airlines CEO Annette Mann.
The introduction of high-speed internet is part of Austrian Airlines' largest product modernisation programme, which includes investments in new aircraft and premium seating. The airline is also expanding its lounge space at Vienna Airport, with four new lounges set to open in Q2 2027. The new internet service will be free for all Miles & More members and Travel ID users, providing a seamless online experience across all travel classes.
Starlink's collaboration with the Lufthansa Group aims to equip 850 aircraft with advanced satellite technology, enabling video streaming and cloud-based working. This initiative positions Lufthansa Group as Europe's largest airline group to offer modern high-speed internet across its fleet. The rollout includes other Group airlines such as Lufthansa, SWISS, and Brussels Airlines.
The fleet modernisation will see the gradual phasing out of 17 Embraer aircraft by 2029, with six new A320neo aircraft joining Austrian Airlines' short and medium-haul fleet. The next Starlink-equipped Airbus A320neo is expected to take off soon, further enhancing the airline's connectivity offerings.
