A new survey reveals that solo travel is rising in popularity, with many Americans citing it as an experience everyone should try at least once in their lifetime. The poll of 522 consumers found that 11.7% specifically recommended traveling alone, highlighting the personal growth, cultural immersion and social connections it facilitates.
"Traveling solo allows you to fully immerse yourself in the moments and experiences without worrying about others' interests or schedules," said Scott Sidders, co-founder of Scott & Yanling Media Inc. "You can be spontaneous, follow your intuition and see where the journey takes you."
The survey showed that while traveling with friends or family is enjoyable, going it alone often leads travelers out of their comfort zones. Respondents reported pushing themselves to meet new people, try new activities and fully embed themselves in local cultures. Many said they learned more about themselves through solo travel than they ever expected.
"It's an opportunity to rely on your own voice and direction. The empowerment and self-confidence you gain is invaluable," Sidders noted.
In addition to personal rewards, solo travelers often forge meaningful connections and friendships along their routes. Yanling Sidders, who met her husband Scott while traveling alone in China, observed, "You never know where a solo trip can take you and who you might cross paths with. It completely reshaped the trajectory of my life."
While Hawaiian getaways topped the list of dream destinations, many solo travelers seek out exotic locations that challenge their perspectives. Given ample budgets, popular picks included Italy, Japan, Australia, Greece and other countries far from home.
"Stepping outside your comfort zone is when the magic happens," Sidders said. "Solo travel allows you to immerse yourself fully in the beauty of getting lost – lost in new cultures, foods, landscapes and connections. It's an experience everyone should have."
