The Calgary Stampede, a hallmark event for the city, has been revealed to significantly boost local economic activity, according to insights from the Mastercard Economics Institute (MEI).

The 2025 event generated an approximate 18% increase in spending at local merchants compared to baseline levels, with restaurants experiencing a notable 29% surge.

The data, derived from aggregated and anonymised spending insights from 2025 and travel trends up to May 2026, highlights how the Stampede stimulates Calgary's economy even before it begins. Retail spending spikes ahead of the opening weekend as locals and visitors prepare for the festivities, whilst accommodation demand peaks early, particularly in downtown Calgary.

Benjamin Jacob, Senior Vice President of Services at Mastercard Canada, emphasised the event's dual role as a cultural and economic catalyst. "For local businesses, success during Stampede is not just about being busy; it is about being ready," he stated, underscoring the importance of strategic planning for businesses during this period.

International interest in the Stampede is also on the rise, with travel bookings from countries such as the US, Belgium, the Netherlands, Great Britain, and Australia increasing year over year in 2026. Melanie McDonald, Vice President of Strategic Initiatives at the Calgary Chamber of Commerce, noted the event's role in showcasing Calgary globally, generating an estimated $664 million (US$664 million) in economic activity in 2025.

The Mastercard Economics Institute's findings illustrate the Stampede's impact across various sectors, with spending patterns varying by sector, location, and timing. This data helps businesses and governments plan effectively, leveraging the economic opportunities presented by the event
