The Hong Kong Palace Museum has unveiled a major retrospective exhibition titled "Joyful Encounters: The Connoisseurship and Art of Wong Kwan Shut," celebrating the life and work of the esteemed Hong Kong calligrapher and painter. The exhibition, which runs from 13 June to 30 September 2026, marks the first major retrospective of Wong's contributions to Chinese art and culture.

Wong Kwan Shut, who passed away in April 2026 at the age of 93, was a distinguished scholar-artist known for his mastery in painting and calligraphy. His works have been showcased globally, and he was celebrated for his ability to blend classical traditions with a unique lyrical style. The exhibition is built upon a significant donation of 68 works by Wong and his wife, Mrs Wong Pong Chi-ying, to the museum.

The exhibition is divided into three sections: "Poetising Subtle Feelings," which highlights Wong's calligraphy; "Gentle Breeze," focusing on his paintings; and "Gatherings of Virtuous Intellectuals," which explores his connoisseurship and artistic exchanges. Each section offers insight into Wong's artistic journey and his deep engagement with ancient Chinese art forms.

Mrs Wong Pong Chi-ying expressed her gratitude to the museum for organising the exhibition, hoping it would deepen visitors' appreciation of Chinese culture. Tsang Tak-sing, Vice Chairman of the HKPM Board, acknowledged the Wongs' generosity, noting that their donation has significantly enriched the museum's collection.

The exhibition aims to advance the appreciation of Chinese calligraphy and painting through education, conservation, and research. A public talk and an exhibition catalogue will further explore Wong's artistic achievements and contributions to the art world
