The North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) has announced the reopening of its full line service from Pickering to Whitby, effective 1 June 2026. This follows essential inspections and temporary propping of Bridge 42 to ensure safety and operational reliability. The 24-mile heritage route offers passengers a scenic journey through the North York Moors National Park to the coastal town of Whitby.
The reopening introduces a new fare structure aimed at making heritage rail travel more accessible, particularly for families. The "Kids Go Free" offer allows one free child ticket per fare-paying adult on standard services. Additionally, the NYMR has introduced two fare types for 2026: the School Holiday Saver Rate, available during school holidays, and Regular Fare Dates for other periods.
Laura Strangeway, CEO of the NYMR, expressed enthusiasm about resuming full services, stating, "We're delighted to once again be taking passengers all the way from Pickering to Grosmont and Whitby on the NYMR." She emphasised the importance of providing a safe and enjoyable experience for visitors and thanked local residents and organisations for their support during the bridge's inspection period.
A major appeal has been launched to raise a minimum of $960,000 (£800,000) for the necessary repairs to Bridge 42, ensuring its long-term preservation. The full repair programme is scheduled for the winter of 2026–27. Tickets for the NYMR can be booked online, offering options for both short journeys and full-day experiences
