Olympics spark 27% jump in Asian bookings
Asia represents the highest growth region for bookings to London during the 2012 Olympics period, and the third largest source market.
Commenting on the trend, David Brett, president of Amadeus Asia Pacific, said; “That Asia is the third largest source region for travel to London during the 2012 Olympic Games is testament to the significance role Asia Pacific plays within the global travel stage today.”
The data was collated and published in a joint report by Amadeus and ForwardKeys.com. With approximately 50 days to go before the Games, the data shows that overall booking figures for the Olympics period, made by 12 May 2012, are 13% higher than in 2011.
Europe and America combined contribute the bulk 69% of bookings during the Olympics, with Asia providing 9% and demonstrating a 27% spike in forward bookings compared to August 2011.
“These figures highlight a significant boost in travel to London from the Asia Pacific region during the Games, presenting a major opportunity for travel providers and agencies,” said Brett.
Meanwhile, BRICS nations are emerging as important source nations for long-haul travel to London. During the Olympics period, BRICS countries are seeing a 40% increase in bookings compared with 2011, representing a 9% share of total arrivals.
