Hua Hin – Thailand’s Coastal Gem and the Future Blueprint for Tourism?
Photo: Thai tourism’s future blue print? We explore how Hua Hin might be used as a model for tourism recovery and innovation across the country Tucked along the Gulf of Thailand, just a few hours from Bangkok, Hua Hin remains one of the kingdom’s most alluring coastal towns—a sanctuary where timeless elegance meets serene simplicity. My recent stay in Hua Hin, beginning mid-May, reaffirmed the reasons I call this place my “happy place.” The gentle lapping of waves, early morning walks along the shoreline, and the peaceful cadence of tropical life offered a stark contrast to the world’s current uncertainties. From my vantage point at the Hyatt—overlooking lush gardens, lotus ponds, and the saltwater scent of sea air—Hua Hin reminded me of Thailand at its best: graceful, welcoming, and quietly resilient. A Season of Reflection This visit came at a particularly poignant time for Thailand. In March, a powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake in neighbouring Myanmar sent tremors through much of the region, shaking buildings in Bangkok and stirring unease across the kingdom. It was a stark reminder of how quickly the equilibrium of daily life can shift. Yet, as always, the Thai spirit endures. Communities rallied. The government acted swiftly. And across the tourism sector, new safety protocols and messages of reassurance were implemented. Hua Hin, with its royal legacy and gentle pace, felt like a fitting place to pause, reflect, and consider not only what’s been lost—but what may yet be regained. The Economic Engine at Risk Tourism has long been one of Thailand’s most potent economic engines, contributing nearly 20% of GDP and employing millions across both urban centres and rural provinces. Pre-pandemic, the sector generated over 3 trillion baht annually in direct and indirect revenue. With foreign arrivals dipping 1.75% year-on-year as of mid-May, and some analysts suggesting that annual tourism arrivals might only match last year’s figure—the immediate economic loss, against it’s planned revenue, is therefore staggering. In 2024, Thailand experienced a robust resurgence in its tourism sector, welcoming approximately 35.54 million international visitors—a 26.3% increase compared to 2023. This influx generated over 1.7 trillion baht (approximately USD 51.81 billion) in revenue, underscoring the sector’s pivotal role in the nation’s economic recovery. The top source countries contributing to this growth were China (6.7 million visitors), Malaysia (4.93 million), and India (2.12 million). Strategic government initiatives, such as visa exemptions for citizens of 93 countries significantly enhanced travel convenience and encouraged more visitors to choose Thailand. Domestically, Thai residents made approximately 198.69 million trips, contributing an additional 952.77 billion baht to the economy. Collectively, both international and domestic tourism activities in 2024 generated a total revenue exceeding 2.75 trillion baht, highlighting the sector’s substantial contribution to Thailand’s economic landscape. Looking ahead, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has set ambitious targets for 2025, aiming to attract between 36 and 39 million international visitors and generate up to 2.23 trillion baht in tourism revenue. But the real danger lies in long-term erosion: not just of revenue, but of global competitiveness, investor confidence, and industry morale. Here’s the paradox, while the losses measure in the trillions, the required investment to pivot and rejuvenate the sector could be relatively modest in comparison. A government or private sector infusion of just 100–200 billion baht—a fraction of annual tourism revenues—could fund sweeping changes: from digitisation and marketing, to upskilling labour and creating crisis-resilient infrastructure. This is not just about plugging gaps, but about leveraging a slowdown to reimagine the future of Thai tourism. Five Possible Courses of Direction for Thai Tourism’s Next Chapter 1.Diversify Source Markets Beyond China and Russia Over-reliance on a few key markets makes the sector vulnerable to geopolitical and economic swings. Greater focus on India, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and high-spending travellers from the EU and North America can spread risk and increase average per-trip expenditure. 2.Develop Year-Round Domestic Tourism Incentives Supporting Thai travellers with seasonal incentives and domestic tourism campaigns can stabilise occupancy during shoulder and low seasons. Creating loyalty programmes or tax rebates for local travellers could go a long way. 3.Upgrade Infrastructure & Digitisation Seamless travel experiences—from e-visas to smart airports and real-time transport integration—are essential. Investment in AI-powered visitor services, multilingual content, and efficient public transport in tourist areas could elevate Thailand’s competitiveness overnight. Photo: Develop year-round domestic tourism 4.Promote Sustainable & Community-Based Tourism Eco-conscious travellers are looking for meaning, not just luxury. Hua Hin and similar towns can promote authentic, low-impact experiences—such as homestays, local crafts, and conservation tourism—while supporting rural economies and reducing overcrowding in hotspots. 5.Establish a National Tourism Innovation Fund A public-private investment vehicle could support SMEs in the hospitality and travel sectors with grants, training, and innovation hubs. Focus areas could include green tech, accessibility for seniors and people with disabilities, and wellness-oriented travel. Why Hua Hin Still Matters In an uncertain global landscape, Hua Hin continues to offer rare clarity, calm without sterility, tradition without the trappings of cliché. In Hua Hin I enjoyed peaceful afternoons by the lagoon pool and evenings filled with jazz and sea breezes, I rediscovered not only a destination—but a direction. The Thai tourism industry has been knocked off balance, yes—but it is not broken. With strategic thinking and modest but meaningful investment, it can rise stronger, smarter, and more inclusive than before. And towns like Hua Hin, quiet stars in the national constellation, will be vital in guiding that journey forward.

Union Budget 2025
Union Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs Nirmala Sitharaman presented the Union Budget 2025-26 in Parliament on 1st Feb 2025. She unveiled plans to develop 50 tourist destinations, boosting the tourism budget to INR 2,541.06 crore, focusing on employment-led growth. We bring a summary of the post- budget reactions from the travel and hospitality industry. Hiring in travel, healthcare and aviation Balasubramanian A, Senior VP and Business Head at TeamLease said: "The Finance Minister’s announcements will give a strong push to India’s tourism, healthcare, and aviation sectors, creating jobs and driving economic growth. Easier visa norms under ‘Heal in India’ will attract more medical tourists, boosting hospitals, hospitality, and foreign exchange earnings. Opening up PM GatiShakti data to private players and developing 22 key destinations in partnership with states will strengthen tourism infrastructure and local economies. The expansion of UDAN to 120 new destinations and new greenfield airports in Bihar will improve regional connectivity, making air travel more accessible to the middle class while supporting trade and investment. These steps position India as a key global destination for tourism, healthcare, and aviation-driven growth." Performance-linked incentives for states Hari Ganapathy, Co-founder, Pickyourtrail "The Union Budget 2025-26 makes a strong statement about India's ambitions to position itself as a global tourism hub. The focus on developing 50 key tourist destinations, expanding the UDAN scheme for regional connectivity, and strengthening skill development in hospitality signals a long-term vision for making India a more seamless and traveler-friendly destination. Tourism has long been a powerful economic engine, and these measures ensure that we’re not just growing the sector but doing so in a way that is sustainable, inclusive, and globally competitive. The performance-linked incentives for states to enhance their tourism ecosystems are a smart move, encouraging localized improvements in infrastructure, cleanliness, and experience-building. The expansion of visa-on-arrival facilities and the 'Heal in India' initiative for medical tourism further reinforce India's commitment to making travel easier and more accessible. Equally critical is the push for airport infrastructure expansion, with new greenfield airports in Bihar and the expansion of Patna Airport and Bihta. The growth of India's aviation network will not only enhance domestic travel but also make secondary and tertiary cities more accessible to international tourists. The UDAN expansion covering 120 new destinations is a game-changer—ensuring that travel demand isn’t just concentrated in metros but extends to aspirational districts, hilly terrains, and high-potential yet underutilized destinations. More than just connectivity, this move supports local economies, creating opportunities for small businesses and tourism entrepreneurs across the country. While these are commendable steps, there’s still an opportunity to reimagine India’s global tourism positioning. The real impact will come from execution—how well we bridge infrastructure gaps, streamline traveler experiences, and create compelling, high-quality travel offerings that make India a preferred destination not just for international tourists but for domestic travelers as well. This budget sets the foundation, and it’s now up to the industry and stakeholders to turn these policy moves into real impact." Strengthening regional tourism and connectivity in India Dharamveer Singh Chouhan, Co-founder & CEO, Zostel said: We appreciate the government’s continued commitment to strengthening regional tourism and connectivity in India. The plan to develop the top 50 tourism sites in collaboration with states, along with including hotels in the harmonized infrastructure list, is a significant step toward boosting the sector. Enhanced connectivity, better infrastructure, and a strong push for medical and regional tourism will make it easier for both domestic and international travelers to explore India’s hidden gems. Since its inception, Zostel has been at the forefront of sustainable and experiential tourism, working alongside locals and governments to spotlight lesser-known destinations. We will continue this mission and would be happy to collaborate with Bihar and other state governments to promote local employment, culture, and cuisine through responsible tourism. Inclusion of hotels in these destinations in the harmonious master list is a significant move K Syama Raju, President of FHRAI added: "I am happy to see the Union Budget 2025 focus on growing India’s tourism sector. The plan to develop the top 50 tourism destinations in partnership with state governments is a major initiative. This collaboration will not only improve infrastructure but also help spread tourism across the country, attracting more visitors and benefiting local communities. Additionally, the inclusion of hotels in these destinations in the harmonious master list is a significant move. This aligns with our long-standing request for granting of Infrastructure Status to the hospitality industry. This will facilitate access to cheaper, long-term financing, enabling hotels in these newly developed destinations to upgrade their facilities and offer world-class services, further boosting the sector. The focus on medical and wellness tourism through the 'Heal-in-India' initiative in the Union Budget 2025 is a forward-thinking move that will strengthen India's position as a global leader in healthcare. India has already earned a reputation for providing world-class medical treatments at a fraction of the cost found in developed countries. By promoting 'Heal-in-India,' the government aims to further capitalize on this strength, attracting international patients seeking affordable, high-quality healthcare services. This initiative will not only boost medical and wellness tourism but will also create a platform for India’s healthcare industry to expand its global footprint. With the support of the government, healthcare facilities across the country will be encouraged to offer specialized treatments and services, making India an attractive destination for patients from both developed and developing nations. The introduction of visa fee waivers and e-visa options for certain tourist groups will make India an even more attractive destination. Simplifying the visa process will encourage more international visitors, boosting tourism and further contributing to the economy. The government’s focus on promoting religious tourism is also noteworthy. India’s rich spiritual and cultural heritage is a major draw for both domestic and international tourists, and the efforts to enhance infrastructure at key religious sites will create more organized, accessible, and enjoyable experiences for pilgrims and travelers alike. This will help further establish India as a leading destination for religious tourism, driving both tourism revenue and cultural exchange. The modified UDAN scheme, aimed at enhancing regional connectivity to 120 new destinations and carrying an additional 4 crore passengers over the next 10 years, is another important initiative. This will make travel more accessible to a larger number of people, driving tourism to both popular and emerging destinations and improving economic opportunities for local communities. The introduction of Mudra loans for homestay businesses is another positive step. It will give local entrepreneurs the chance to start and grow small tourism businesses, especially in lesser-known areas. This will help create more jobs and encourage tourism in these regions. The National Geospatial Mission to improve mapping and spatial data will aid in better planning and development of tourism infrastructure. Overall, these measures show that the government is committed to making India a top global tourism destination and creating new opportunities for growth, jobs, and innovation in the sector." Prioritizing e-visas and visa fee waivers Mohak Nahta, Founder and CEO of Atlys adds: "The government’s commitment to developing 50 tourist destinations and prioritizing e-visas and visa fee waivers is a significant step toward strengthening India’s position as a global travel hub. Streamlining visa access has consistently been a key driver of tourism growth, and these measures will enhance inbound travel while boosting employment and local economies. The emphasis on spiritual and medical tourism aligns with India’s unique strengths, catering to global travellers seeking immersive cultural experiences and world-class healthcare. These initiatives will not only attract more visitors but also create new opportunities for businesses in hospitality, wellness, and allied sectors, further driving economic growth." Heal in India’ initiative will further diversify India’s tourism offerings Rikant Pittie, CEO and Co-Founder, EaseMyTrip, "The Union Budget 2025-26 presents a transformative vision for India's travel and tourism sector, reinforcing its role as a key driver of economic growth and employment. The expansion of the UDAN scheme, connecting 120 new destinations and enabling 4 crore additional passengers over the next decade, will significantly enhance regional connectivity, making travel more accessible and affordable for millions. The facilitation of greenfield airports in Bihar further underscores the government’s commitment to strengthening aviation infrastructure across the country. Moreover, the proposed development of 50 top tourist destinations, coupled with performance-linked incentives for states, streamlined e-visa facilities, and visa-fee waivers, will position India as a more attractive global travel destination by easing out travel infrastructure. Initiatives like skill development programs, MUDRA loans for homestays, and enhanced connectivity will empower local communities, create employment opportunities, and enable businesses to thrive more efficiently. The emphasis on spiritual tourism, particularly in destinations linked to Lord Buddha, and the strategic push for medical tourism through the ‘Heal in India’ initiative will further diversify India’s tourism offerings, attracting travelers from across the world. With a focus on seamless travel, enhanced infrastructure, and an enabling policy framework, this budget lays a strong foundation for a new era of tourism-led economic growth, ensuring India remains a top destination for both domestic and international travellers." Modified UDAN scheme targeting 120 new destinations. Suresh Khadakbhavi, CEO, Digi Yatra Foundation said: “We welcome the government's visionary decision to expand India's aviation infrastructure through new greenfield airports in Bihar and the modified UDAN scheme targeting 120 new destinations. These announcements reflect the government's commitment to strengthening regional air connectivity and making air travel accessible to more Indians. The remarkable expansion of UDAN has already connected 88 airports and served 1.5 crore middle-class travellers. As air connectivity grows to accommodate 4 crore additional passengers, we look forward to facilitating the smooth movement of passengers at a wider number of airports. The government's emphasis on medical tourism and the 'Heal in India' initiative, coupled with easier visa norms, marks a significant step toward positioning India as a global healthcare destination. The integration with PM Gatishakti's data infrastructure will enable synchronised development across the aviation sector. As the government partners with states to develop 22 premier tourist destinations, we are committed to supporting this growth by expanding our technology, thereby contributing to India's emergence as a global aviation leader and strengthening Digital India.” Visa-free access for select countries and streamlined e-visa processes Commenting on the Union Budget India 2025 for the travel and tourism sector, Anuj Rathi, Chief Business and Growth Officer, Cleartrip said, “India’s travel industry is poised for growth, with the government’s focus on infrastructure, sustainable tourism, and medical tourism. The expansion of UDAAN, the development of 50 key tourist destinations, and support for homestays offer significant opportunities. Cleartrip aims to leverage these efforts to provide seamless, affordable travel experiences for all.” Navneet Nagpal, Princpal Consultant and Director, Spectra Hospitality Services an expert in the luxury hotel industry said: “This year’s Union Budget marks a significant turning point for India’s tourism sector, particularly in attracting foreigntravelerss—a segment that has long needed greater focus. The introduction of visa-free access for select countries and streamlined e-visa processes will play a crucial role in enhancing inbound tourism, positioning India as a more accessible and attractive global destination. The announcement of 50 key destinations to be developed under the challenge mode is a transformative step. By curating world-class experiences and investing in infrastructure, India can strengthen its appeal as a premier hub for leisure, heritage, and experiential tourism. Additionally, the renewed emphasis on Buddhist Circuit tourism is a strategic move to boost footfall from Southeast Asian countries, tapping into an underutilized yet high-potential market. Equally important is the government’s focus on skill development through IHMs and financial support for homestays via Mudra loans. These initiatives will not only elevate service standards but also create meaningful economic opportunities at the grassroots level, fostering a more inclusive tourism ecosystem. With this renewed strategic push for foreign tourism, India’s hospitality sector is poised for accelerated growth, increased revenue generation, and a stronger presence on the global tourism map. The emphasis on public-private partnerships (PPP) and incentive-linked support for tourism infrastructure further strengthens the industry’s long-term sustainability and competitiveness.” Budget aligns well with the industry's need for support Rajesh Ghanshani, Director of Partnerships, STAAH said: We are glad to learn that the Union Budget 2025-26 presents a promising outlook for the hospitality space. The government's focus on providing infrastructure status to hotels in select tourist destinations will undoubtedly ease access to financial resources and enable much-needed development in key regions. Additionally, the introduction of initiatives like the promotion of medical tourism and the provision of Mudra loans for homestays will create avenues for rural tourism within the hospitality sector. This budget aligns well with the industry's need for support in expanding its reach, fostering local businesses, and driving sustainable growth in 50 select destinations. With these measures, we look forward to seeing a more vibrant hospitality ecosystem that will benefit both businesses and the communities they serve. “We appreciate the government’s forward-looking vision for India’s tourism sector as outlined in the Budget FY2025-26 presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. The comprehensive measures announced demonstrate a clear commitment to strengthening tourism infrastructure and enhancing the overall visitor experience across the country. The plans to develop 50 premier tourist destinations, along with the successful air connectivity to 120 new destinations, will enable an additional four crore passengers over the next 10 years to explore India, showcasing promising growth potential. The emphasis on diverse segments, including spiritual, religious, and medical tourism, suggests potential opportunities for varied tourism experiences across India. As industry stakeholders, we welcome these developments and look forward to contributing to India’s growing hospitality, travel, and tourism landscape, ” added Ayu Tripathi, Director, Aahana Resort Infrastructure development and aviation expansion Amit Goyal, Regional Managing Director, South Asia – Project Management Institute (PMI) said: “The Union Budget for 2025-26, presented by the Finance Minister, lays a visionary roadmap for India's growth and resilience, embodying the spirit of Atmanirbharta (self-reliance). With a strong emphasis on education and skill development, the budget aims to achieve 100% literacy and enhance the quality of education. Initiatives such as the expansion of the PM Research Fellowship program, and the establishment of three AI Centres of Excellence with an allocation of ₹500 crore. The enhanced allocation to medical education reflects a robust focus on strengthening India’s healthcare infrastructure, addressing both immediate needs and long-term capacity building and also highlights India’s investment in its human capital. The budget also prioritizes infrastructure development, aviation expansion, and innovation, positioning India as a global hub for large-scale projects. This creates significant demand for skilled project management professionals who will be pivotal in executing these ambitious ventures, especially critical ones like the advancement of foundational geospatial infra and data under the PM Gati Shakti Scheme. Moreover, the emphasis on sustainability, through initiatives like Clean Tech, ensures that India’s growth trajectory aligns with global environmental goals, fostering a greener and more sustainable future. In essence, the 2025-26 budget is a forward-looking blueprint that empowers the youth, strengthens the nation's infrastructure, and champions innovation, laying the groundwork for a prosperous and self-reliant Viksit Bharat.”

Bhojeshwar Temple: Story of the tallest Shiva Linga in Madhya Pradesh
Madhya Pradesh is a State of Archaeological and Geological marvels which aptly offers a treasure trove for history enthusiasts. Bhojpur, located 28 kilometers from Bhopal on the Betwa river, is the setting for the renowned 10th-century Bhojeswar temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Built by the famous Paramar King Raja Bhoj, the temple houses one of India’s largest lingas measuring 5.5 meters tall and 2.3 meters in circumference. The Shiva temple of Bhojeshwar Mahadev located in the picturesque town of Bhojpur is one of the most important heritage sites in the area. The Bhojeshwar Temple just 29 km from Bhopal has been recently included in the tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This recognition highlights its architectural significance and cultural heritage, making it a focal point for history enthusiasts and travellers alike. The evidence of how the Bhojeshwar Temple was planned and built makes it fascinating. The carvings on the nearby rocks show the original plans for the temple's construction. The large stones used to build the higher parts of the temple are still there, and you can see the ramp they were probably pulled up on. Ashapuri is another neighbouring archaeological site that is well worth a visit. Constructed throughout the 9th and 11th centuries, this temple complex is made up of 24 temple bases and thousands of architectural components that are dispersed over the hills. The Bhojpur temple is notable for its unique architectural features. Unlike the traditional curved Shikhara, it has a rectangular roof. Additionally, there is no Mandapa connecting to the Garbhagriha. The entrance wall is decorated with intricate carvings of bells and pillars, giving it a stunning appearance. The 7.5-foot-tall stone Shivling sits atop a 21-foot-high platform. The shivling's circle is approximately eighteen feet wide. An iron staircase provides easy access to the sanctuary for worshippers. The temple's significance lies in the size of the Shivling's building. The Bhojpur shivling is made up of three stacked limestone blocks. Four pillars support the massive 40-foot-tall stone dome, holding up the spectacular temple. The ground floor has eight corners and is guarded by two impressive idols. Looking towards the northeast corner, you'll see the temple's numerous stone carvings adorning its pillars, dome, and exterior. The National Tourism Award (2013–14) for 'Best Maintained and Disabled Friendly Monument' was given to the temple in 2015. A large number of people visit the temple on Maha Shivaratri. As every year, around this time the venue hosts the Bhojpur Utsava, a cultural event. This all makes it an attractive site to visit and gather some lifetime memories with family and friends. The Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board has made a serious effort to promote destinations like Bhojeshwar Temple on national as well as international platforms leading in the increased awareness about the destination among the visitors. The nearest Railway station to the temple is Bhopal (29 km), therefore the nearest airport is Raja Bhoj Airport (50kms)

Focus on Spiritual and Cruise Tourism in the Indian Union Budget 2024
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the Union Budget 2024 today, with this budget, she is India's only Finance Minister to present seven budgets consecutively. Sitharaman takes spiritual tourism forward with Kashi Vishwanath, Nalanda and more... The finance minister proposed supporting the development of corridors at Vishnupad Temple and Mahabodhi Temple, following the model of the Kashi Vishwanath Temple. Additionally, the government will back the development of Nalanda in Bihar as a tourist center. Finance Minister Sitharaman also announced that an economic policy framework will be introduced to usher in next-generation reforms aimed at boosting economic growth. Furthermore, the government will provide assistance to Odisha for the development of tourism, as stated by the FM in Lok Sabha." Tourism boost to states of Odisha and Bihar Centre to provide assistance to Odisha in developing tourist attractions. Known for its scenic beauty, temples, craftsmanship, and wildlife, Odisha holds great potential as a tourist hotspot. The government aims to leverage these assets to attract more visitors to the state. In Bihar, the Vishnupad Temple Corridor and the Mahabodhi Temple Corridor are set to undergo comprehensive development. Rajgir, another historically significant location, will see extensive development. Additionally, Nalanda is set to be developed as a major tourist centre with plans to revive the prestigious Nalanda University to its former glory. Fllip to cruise tourism Industry data showed that cruise tourism in India has hit a new high, with footfall touching 4.7 lakh in 2023-24, higher than the pre-pandemic period. Out of this, over four lakhs were domestic tourists. "There is tremendous potential for cruise tourism in India. To give a fillip to this employment-generating industry, I am proposing a simpler tax regime for foreign shipping companies operating domestic cruises in the country.” Budget 2024 on connectivity and infrastructure to boost tourism Sitharaman reiterated the government's commitment to improving connectivity to boost tourism. As part of this strategy, the Amritsar-Kolkata industrial corridor will see the establishment of an industrial node in Gaya. An allocation of INR 26,000 crore has been made for critical infrastructure projects in Bihar. These include the construction of the Patna-Purnea expressway, the Buxar-Bhagalpur highway, a two-lane bridge over the Ganga river in Buxar, and the Bodhgaya-Rajgir-Vaishali-Darbhanga corridor. According to the Finance Minister, these projects are vital for spurring growth in the eastern region of the country. "Continued focus on infrastructure" Anuj Puri, Chairman - ANAROCK Group said: “Covering a wide spectrum of Indian sectors, the first Union Budget of Modi 3.0 focuses on MSMEs, employment, skilling, youth, and the middle class. It will generate a mixed bag of reactions from different sectors. From a real estate point of view, the first thing that stands out is the government’s continued focus on infrastructure with an allocation of over INR 11.11 lakh crore - nearly 3.4% of India’s GDP. Improved infrastructure drives real estate growth. Mega allocation for the Hyderabad-Bengaluru industrial corridor and Vizag-Chennai corridor will boost growth along these corridors and consequently boost real estate growth there. The FM also tried to rejuvenate the MSME sector, which does have a multiplier effect on overall economic growth – with the implied positives for real estate as a collateral beneficiary of such growth.” "Reduction of the TDS rate on e-commerce operators to 0.1% is positive" Rajesh Magow, Co-Founder & Group CEO, MakeMyTrip, said: “The government's continued emphasis on infrastructure development is commendable. Enhanced road infrastructure will bolster the travel and tourism sector. We also welcome the initiatives to develop iconic spiritual and cultural sites into world class tourist hotspots. The decision to reduce the TDS rate on e-commerce operators to 0.1% is a welcome move. Furthermore, the provision of credit for TCS against income tax under 'Income from Salaries' is logical and will provide much desired relief to taxpayers who travel internationally.” "We can meet the increasing demand for spiritual experiences" Nikhil Sharma, managing director and area senior vice president- South Asia, Radisson Hotel Group said: “We welcome the Union Budget 2024-2025 which focuses on positioning India as a global tourism hub through progressive initiatives. The surge in spiritual tourism has been recognised, and we are excited to see the sector receiving much-needed support in this year’s budget. The development of road connectivity projects, with a special emphasis on spiritual and cultural corridors, underscores the Government of India’s commitment to fueling the growth of the country's rich cultural and spiritual network of tourism. At Radisson Hotel Group, we have always focused on Tier II and III cities, leveraging a first-mover advantage with 50% of our portfolio in these regions. Our strategic commitment to these destinations aligns with the government’s vision, allowing us to meet the increasing demand for spiritual experiences and further strengthen our presence across India. We are optimistic that this development will not only propel the domestic tourism sector but will also provide an opportunity for foreign tourists to further explore the rich culture of India.” "No policy announcement to facilitate the development of hotels" K.B. Kachru, chairman emeritus and principal advisor, Radisson Hotel Group South Asia & President - HAI, said: "Continued focus on infrastructural development, fiscal prudence, and consolidation. Tourism continues to be accepted as an engine of growth for the economy. Emphasis on spiritual tourism, however, no policy changes to expedite growth. Tourism and hospitality play a crucial role in the growth of the Indian economy. The continued focus on government spending on infrastructure development augurs well for the sector. Improved infrastructure would translate into better connectivity, which will be beneficial to the promotion of tourism. The development of the eastern region, temple corridors in Gaya and Bodhgaya, and identification of Nalanda as a key tourism site continue to demonstrate the government’s intent to utilize the potential of tourism. Regrettably, however there has been no policy announcement to facilitate the development of hotels and promotion of inbound tourism. The announcement of GST simplification, and comprehensive review of the Income Tax Act provides some hope for the sector that has been seeking rationalization of taxes. The benefits to individuals on taxation will augment the spending power. The focus on skilling and incentivizing employers for creating jobs are other positives that will benefit all sectors. Although not directly linked to this budget, the industry would continue its ask for granting of infrastructure status for the hospitality sector and industry-related benefits by all state governments. "Hospitality sector is disappointed but not dejected' Pradeep Shetty, president, FHRAI said, “The hospitality sector has been pinning high hopes on the Union Budget for 2024- 25 presented by Nirmala Sitharaman today, on the backdrop of the Government of India’s stated vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047 and the critical role tourism industry holds in achieving it. However, there is nothing spectacular in the budget to bring structural changes to address the fundamental challenges it faces in a competitive world order and to accelerate the growth of the sector to be a $ 3 trillion economy by 2047. Some key demands of tourism & hospitality to revitalise the sector such as GST rationalisation, granting of infrastructure status and bringing ease of doing business and policy reforms have not been considered in the budget once again, given the well accepted multiplier effect of tourism on employment and economy. The hospitality sector is disappointed but not dejected as the overall focus on infrastructure development, employment generation and skill development and development of religious tourism centres are the silver linings which will help the sector to tide over some of the critical challenges that it faces today. The focus of Budget 2024 on youth employment, skill development and job creation are welcome initiatives. The industry has been facing a shortage of skilled workforce, especially in the hospitality sector. It is also laudable that the Finance Minister's Budget speech highlights the Governments’ commitment to make India a premier global travel destination through targeted investment and strategic initiatives. Development of iconic spiritual sites along with promotion of cruise and beach tourism can be helpful in attracting both domestic and international tourists. "Internship for 1 crore youth to gain industry experiences" Raghav Gupta, managing director, APAC and India, Coursera said: "The Union Budget 2024-2025 showcases a crucial commitment to boosting education, employment, and skill-building capacity, perfectly aligning with the Government's vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047. The budget’s special focus on skilling 20 lakh youth over the next five years through centrally sponsored schemes, the upgradation of 1,000 training institutes, and the provision of skilling loans are steps in the right direction. I am particularly excited about the provision for 1 crore youth to gain industry experience through internships with 500 top companies – this will bridge the gap between theory and practice. The cross-sector collaboration can address the rapidly growing skills gap and social inequities, ensuring students transition smoothly into high-demand job roles. Businesses will also benefit from a diverse and skilled talent pool, reducing recruitment time and costs. In today's digital era, where talent can emerge from anywhere, access to digital skills will be a game changer. We’re excited to support these initiatives and provide millions of Indians a gateway to more equal opportunities, all while unlocking our demographic dividend and accelerating our journey towards a $5 trillion economy." "Removal of angel tax is expected to be a game-changer for startups" Naina Parekh, founder, EUME added: ‘The Union Budget 2024-2025 brings several transformative changes for the growing D2C sector. The reduction of the TDS rate for e-commerce operators from 1 percent to 0.1 percent likely to ease their financial burdens for e-commerce businesses, allowing them to concentrate more on scaling their operations and driving innovation. The proposed removal of angel tax is expected to be a game-changer for startups. This move could simplify the fundraising process and reduce the tax-related challenges faced by new ventures, fostering a more supportive environment for entrepreneurial growth.” Furthermore, the new eco policy framework has put spotlight on the development of tourism and regional growth in states like Bihar and Odisha. These states are projected to emerge as significant growth hubs, and this focused attention could stimulate local economies and open up new markets for D2C brands. "Presumptive taxation for cruise ship operations " Rikant Pittie, Co-Founder, EaseMyTrip said: “"The government’s attempt in positioning India as the global tourist destination is evident in the Union Budget 2024-25. Demonstrating efforts to promote religious tourism and domestic tourism infrastructure. With special focus on Bihar, Nalanda, and Odisha, the government plans to develop the iconic religious sites to support its infrastructure and transform them into world class pilgrim and tourist destinations. We are optimistic that this will enhance the overall experience of the tourists visiting these religious sites and will uplift the state tourism. Additionally, the government has also shown interest in simplifying taxation in cruise business by proposing a presumptive taxation for cruise ship operations in India. This initiative aims to encourage foreign cruise owners to operate in India, thereby providing a significant boost to cruise tourism in the country." "Improving connectivity to offbeat destinations" Sandeep Arora, director of Brightsun Travel, India said: “We welcome the 2024 budget, especially the focus on boosting spiritual tourism which not only honours the country’s rich cultural heritage but also opens up new avenues for travel and tourism. The special focus on Bihar and Odisha will see extensive development and promotion of religious and historical sites such as Bodh Gaya, Rajgir and Nalanda. Odisha also has a great potential as a destination for religious and beach tourism. The new initiatives to improve infrastructure and connectivity in these offbeat destinations will attract both domestic and international tourists, offering a much-needed boost to the local economy.”
