The Pacific Asia Travel Association has signed a new strategic partnership with Filtrum Inc. aimed at addressing growing concerns around microplastic contamination in bottled water and its impact on traveller wellness and sustainability in the tourism sector.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed during the PATA Annual Summit 2026 in Gyeongju, Republic of Korea, on May 13, 2026. The agreement highlights increasing attention within the global travel industry towards health, sustainability and environmental responsibility, particularly as wellness tourism continues to gain momentum worldwide.

The partnership aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 6 focused on clean water and sanitation. Through the collaboration, both organisations plan to work on research, advocacy, awareness campaigns, marketing initiatives and knowledge-sharing programmes related to reducing microplastic contamination in drinking water.

Speaking following the signing ceremony, PATA CEO Noor Ahmad Hamid said the partnership reflects a shared vision of improving public health and supporting access to safe water across the Asia Pacific region.

He noted that the collaboration aims to increase awareness about the impact of microplastics on travellers and local communities while encouraging solutions that support cleaner and safer drinking water systems throughout the tourism ecosystem.

Filtrum CEO Robert Brown emphasised the growing global concern surrounding bottled water consumption and microplastic exposure, particularly as bottled water has become the default choice for many travellers due to convenience and safety concerns.

According to Brown, the partnership with PATA provides Filtrum with access to a broader global travel audience at a time when travellers are becoming increasingly conscious about personal health, sustainability and wellness experiences. He added that hospitality brands are also under greater pressure to provide safer and more transparent drinking water solutions as part of guest wellness offerings.

The agreement comes amid wider international discussions around microplastic contamination and public health. PATA noted that recent initiatives by the United States Environmental Protection Agency to address microplastics in drinking water have further highlighted the urgency of the issue globally.

While the EPA’s initiatives are currently focused on the United States, PATA said the developments reinforced the importance of supporting broader global efforts to improve access to safe drinking water free from microplastic contamination.

The partnership signals a growing convergence between tourism, wellness and sustainability priorities, particularly as hotels, airlines and tourism operators increasingly integrate environmental health considerations into guest experiences.

The MoU establishes a long-term framework for cooperation between PATA and Filtrum, with both parties expressing interest in pursuing future joint initiatives focused on awareness, education and sustainable tourism development across the Asia Pacific region.
