United Airlines Orders 50 B787 Dreamliners
United Airlines and Boeing have announced that the airline is extending its 787 Dreamliner fleet by exercising options to acquire 50 787-9 planes and gaining an additional 50 options. The latest Dreamliner purchase gives United additional flexibility as it modernises its global fleet over the next decade. “We’re building a bright future at United, and this order takes our already successful United Next plan into the next decade and beyond,” said Scott Kirby, president and CEO of United Airlines. “Our long-term planning and focus have enabled us to surge ahead of other airlines that have stalled.” I’m confident in our plan as we continue adding new, larger aircraft to take full advantage of our growing international and domestic flying opportunities.” United has the largest Dreamliner order book on record, with 150 firm orders, and is poised to become the world’s largest 787 operator. The announcement comes on the back of the airline’s record-breaking acquisition of 100 787 jets last year. United’s existing fleet of more than 70 Dreamliners is the first to operate all three variants of the 787 series. United’s extensive global route network is made possible by the 787’s fuel efficiency and dependability. “United’s unprecedented commitment to the 787 Dreamliner family is a testament to the market-leading operating economics and reliability of Boeing’s widebody jets,” said Stan Deal, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Aeroplanes. “With the 787, United will enjoy all the synergies of operating one of the largest, most efficient fleets in the skies.” Depending on the configuration, the 787 enhances efficiency and performance and lowers fuel usage and emissions by up to 25% compared to the planes it replaces. The 787-9 has a globe-spanning range that allows airlines to fly up to 7,565 nautical miles (14,010 km) with up to 296 people on board. With over 1,800 orders from 87 customers, including more than 870 repeat orders from 56 repeat customers, the 787 is the best-selling widebody in history. Customers have made approximately 350 orders and commitments for the 787 family in the last twelve months. Boeing, a global aerospace leader, develops, manufactures, and maintains commercial aircraft, military goods, and space systems for clients in over 150 countries. Now, this upcoming winter, we will expand even further,” said Patrick Quayle, Senior Vice President of Global Network Planning and Alliances. “Our strong partnerships with Air New Zealand and Virgin Australia provide unparalleled connectivity, and with our historic expansion across five destinations in New Zealand and Australia, United is the clear choice for customers’ travel to the region.” San Francisco – Christchurch, NZ Starting December 1, United will be the only airline to offer direct flights between the U.S. and New Zealand’s South Island, with the first direct San Francisco-Christchurch service. Oscar the Grouch named Chief Trash Officer of United Airlines
by: Harry Johnson | United Airlines today named Sesame Street’s Oscar the Grouch as its first Chief Trash Officer as he and the airline celebrate his love of rubbish. United Airlines’ new, consumer education campaign is designed to promote the expected benefit of using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) more broadly. The new campaign – which features Oscar in more than 30 pieces of original video, digital, social and out-of-home content – follows the iconic character’s journey from job listing to c-suite office starring alongside real United employees. SAF is an alternative to conventional jet fuel that, on a lifecycle basis, reduces greenhouse gas emissions associated with air travel compared to conventional jet fuel alone. SAF is being made from used cooking oil and agricultural waste, and, in the future, could be made from other feedstocks including household trash or forest waste. To date, United Airlines has invested in the future production of over three billion gallons of SAF – the most of any airline in the world. Consumers can take action too – in a first among U.S. airlines, United now shows an estimate of each flight’s carbon footprint on a per economy seat passenger basis on its app and website, and travelers have the option to contribute to supplement United’s investment in the UAV Sustainable Flight Fund, a first-of-its-kind investment vehicle designed to support start-ups focused on decarbonizing air travel by accelerating the research, production and technologies associated with SAF. “United has invested in more sustainable aviation fuel production than any airline in the world, by far,” said United Chief Communications Officer Josh Earnest. “Every airline burns jet fuel to run their business, but no airline will solve climate change on its own. So United has enlisted Oscar to help us educate the traveling public of all ages about SAF and rally them to the cause of fighting climate change. From banana peels to fryer grease, Oscar is uniquely qualified to help us explain why trash could be the treasure that fuels the jets of the future.” Starting today, people can follow Oscar’s journey as he stars in videos alongside real United employees. The integrated campaign includes interactive social-first elements, colorful spreads in Hemispheres® magazine and a unique film series, all of which were created to simplify a complicated topic in an approachable and entertaining way. Creative highlights include: • Film Series: Across multiple videos, United highlights Oscar’s work in his new role, such as a “BINtro” film showcasing his first day on the job. The film is part of a series that focuses on the importance of SAF. In an additional 90-second film, United Captain Tomica Adams breaks down how things like waste can help fuel air travel. • Out of Home: United’s out-of-home content introduces the airline’s new hire in a larger-than-life format. The playful imagery features Oscar in aviation settings – from tarmac to onboard. The photos will pique people’s interest about how trash could one day help us fly toward a lower carbon future. • Digital/Social: Providing surround sound to the campaign, storytelling continues on social channels with bite-size edutainment videos, engaging Instagram Story features, emoji-filled Twitter threads and more to raise awareness of the SAF nitty-gritty. The social campaign will live on owned and paid social and digital channels. As a part of the collaboration, United Airlines is supporting Sesame Workshop through a donation to the nonprofit educational organization’s Welcome Sesame initiative. Sesame Workshop will also be included in United Airlines’ Miles on a Mission, where travelers will be able to donate miles to help support its global mission to help children grow smarter stronger and kinder. “This campaign provided a special opportunity to showcase an iconic Sesame Street character, Oscar the Grouch, celebrating what he loves best – trash,” said Jennifer Ahearn, VP, Global Strategic Partnerships & Themed Entertainment, Sesame Workshop. “The amazing collaboration helps United Airlines explain in simpler terms the technology of turning trash into fuel in a fun and engaging manner.” Full article: Oscar the Grouch named Chief Trash Officer of United Airlines Copyright: eTurboNews - Travel Industry News - World Travel News
United Airlines Makes Its Landing In Brisbane
United Airlines’ debut flight from San Francisco to Brisbane landed on Saturday, making it the first American airline to offer regular, non-stop service between the US mainland and Queensland. Flight UA96 will depart SFO at 11:20 pm on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, arriving in BNE at 6:30 am local time on each of those days. Return flight UA97 will leave BNE at 10:30 am and land in SFO at 6:40 am on the same day. A Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner will be utilised for this flight by the airline. The first trans-Pacific flight occurred between these two cities nearly a century before the new service began. “In 1928, Sir Charles Kingsford Smith and his crew became the first to fly across the Pacific from San Francisco to Brisbane. Ninety-four years later, the route they pioneered will now deliver thousands of tourists to Queensland,” Brisbane Airport Corporation CEO Gert-Jan de Graaff said. “That first pioneering journey took 83 hours and 38 minutes, and now it’s a 13-hour 45-minute flight. And the historic Southern Cross aircraft sits opposite our International Terminal where United Airlines docked this morning.” United Airlines’ Patrick Quayle, SVP of global network planning and alliances, conveyed his company’s delight in partnering with the Queensland Government and Brisbane Airport to launch the flights and become “the first US airline to add a new transpacific destination to its global network since the start of the pandemic.” “United has a long history in Australia, and with our new partnership with Virgin Australia, now is the ideal time to expand our service and offer additional convenient flight options to our customers on both sides of the Pacific,” Quayle said. According to Queensland Tourism Minister Stirling Hinchliffe, the service is the first to get funding from Queensland’s $200 million Attracting Aviation Investment Fund, hoping to revitalise the state’s $6 billion international visitor industry. “United Airlines from San Francisco alone is predicted to contribute $27 million to the State’s visitor economy and an extra 40,000 inbound seats, supporting 260 good Queensland jobs,” he added. Australians flying to the US will now be able to connect to more than 80 destinations across North America via United’s SFO hub, thanks to the new route. US Consulate General Christine Elder, who was present when the first flight landed, expressed her desire to see a large number of Americans travel to Australia and many Australians to the United States to experience all that it has to offer. The new United Airlines route between the United States and Australia will open up countless opportunities for connections, which will make it easier for thousands of people to travel between our countries. United Airlines has announced that starting on 14 December; it would boost its frequency of flights between Sydney and San Francisco to ten per week.

United Airlines Plans to Resume Hong Kong Flights From January
United Airlines plans to resume Hong Kong flights as early as January, becoming one of just a few major airlines to resume passenger flights to the city, which has been largely cut off from the outside world since the pandemic began. The Chicago-based carrier is considering resuming service from San Francisco in the new year, according to sources who declined to be identified because the discussions are private. The discussions come after Hong Kong removed compulsory hotel quarantine for inbound visitors last month, ending over two and a half years of restrictions that had left the once-thriving Asian centre devoid of tourists. At the height of the pandemic, obligatory quarantine lasted three weeks, and admission was restricted to Hong Kong residents for an extended period. Cathay Pacific has been the only airline operating nonstop flights between Hong Kong and the United States during the pandemic. After American Airlines Group Inc. permanently suspended its services from Dallas and Los Angeles, United will be the lone US carrier operating to Hong Kong. United suspended passenger flights to Hong Kong on 8 February 2020 and has generally flown cargo-only flights in and out of the city thereafter, except for a brief revival in July 2020 that lasted only one day. United Airlines spokesperson Koji Nagata stated that the company is “currently examining market demand and the operational environment to decide whether it is appropriate for us to restart flying operations to Hong Kong.” In recent weeks, several international carriers announced service increases to Hong Kong, including Singapore Airlines, which will increase flights to three times daily from two beginning at the end of October, and All Nippon Airways Co., which will add Tokyo Haneda services to complement its Narita connections to Hong Kong. British Airways confirmed the return of flights in December two weeks ago, after repeatedly pushing back the date.
