From Montréal, Air Canada will offer non-stop service three times weekly to Germany’s capital, Berlin, and three times per week to Nantes, France. The airline will launch service to Ponta Delgada in the Azores from Toronto, and it is also adding a second international destination from Halifax to Brussels. Additionally, Air Canada will be resuming its Montréal -Tel Aviv seasonal route for next summer. “Air Canada is further expanding its comprehensive transatlantic network to offer customers even more exciting destinations to explore. Air Canada is offering passengers up to 20,000 points for autumn bookings
Travellers can gain up to 20,000 points when booking flights from the UK with Air Canada this autumn. To qualify, members of Aeroplan, Air Canada’s frequent flyer programme, must book a round trip or two one-way tickets for any destination beyond Canada that the airline flies to. This offer is for bookings made between 20 October and 20 November 2025. For example, an Economy Flex from London to Cancun, via Toronto, is considered a one-way trip that qualifies for 10,000 bonus Aeroplan points. Passengers flying two one-way trips via Canada or those with a return ticket are eligible for 20,000 airmiles. Air Canada passengers who book two one-way tickets or a round trip from the UK to Canada during the same period can earn up to 15,000 points. The offer applies to flights from London Heathrow, Manchester or Edinburgh that are taken between 20 October 2025 and 30 June 2026. Aeroplan members who take up this offer can use as little as 6,000 bonus points to redeem a flight within the US, or just 7,500 points for a European flight with one of Air Canada’s partners. Flight redemption bookings and tickets bought with a combination of points and cash are not eligible for this offer.
Air Canada’s London – Ottawa flights continue through Winter 2025-26
Air Canada has announced its London Heathrow to Ottawa non-stop flights will continue for Winter 2025-26, ensuring year-round connectivity between the United Kingdom's largest airport and Canada's capital city. Flights are available for booking now at aircanada.com, through Air Canada Contact Centres, and via travel agents. "Air Canada continues to solidify its leadership serving our country's capital and we are excited to keep Ottawa connected to one of the world’s most important global gateways all year long. We can’t wait to welcome you onboard our flights this winter and beyond,” said Mark Galardo, Executive Vice President & Chief Commercial Officer, and President of Cargo, at Air Canada. “In today’s global landscape, strong connections between Canada’s Capital Region and strategic markets like the United Kingdom are more vital than ever. Air Canada’s decision to extend its Heathrow - Ottawa service through the winter is great news - it reflects the airline’s confidence in our region, its deep commitment to Ottawa-Gatineau, and its role as a leading international carrier” said Susan Margles, President and CEO, Ottawa International Airport Authority. “This move is a win for travellers, businesses, and our entire community.” “Air Canada’s expanded network is more than new destinations - it’s about strengthening Canada’s connections to the world. Most Canadian air cargo travels in the belly of passenger planes, which means every new route also opens a new trade corridor for Canadian goods. The extension of the London - Ottawa service will give Canadian businesses faster and more reliable access to the UK and Europe, supporting our exporters, driving investment, and creating good jobs here at home. Stronger connectivity in the skies means stronger growth on the ground - and ensures Canada remains a leader in the global economy,” stated The Honourable Maninder Sidhu, Minister of International Trade. In addition to its London Heathrow route, Air Canada will operate over 450 weekly flights to and from Ottawa this winter across a range of regional, domestic, international and transborder flights. Air Canada Expands Network for Summer 2026
Air Canada announced its international network for Summer 2026 with new destinations taking flight in Europe and Asia. Beginning next year, the airline will launch new routes from Montréal to Catania in Sicily, Italy and, as unveiled yesterday, to Palma de Mallorca, Spain. From Toronto, Air Canada re-establishes non-stop flights to Shanghai and Budapest, and increases flights to Prague. Air Canada’s popular seasonal Vancouver-Bangkok route will now become year-round, strengthening the airline’s position as the only North American carrier offering direct, non-stop service to the Thai capital. “Air Canada’s continued international expansion reflects our bold ambitions, and leverages our network reach and scale to capitalize on global travel demand driven by leisure travel trends, growing demand for services to Asia, and cargo development opportunities. Next summer, we will be launching exciting, new services to Sicily and Mallorca from our Montréal trans-Atlantic hub. Air Canada is the first Canadian carrier to offer customers non-stop flights to these sought after Mediterranean destinations, and the only airline operating scheduled service from Canada to Sicily and Mallorca,” said Mark Galardo, Executive Vice President & Chief Commercial Officer, and President, Cargo at Air Canada. “From Toronto, we are further cementing our global hub with the launch of two celebrated, international routes linking Canada’s largest metropolitan area directly to Shanghai and Budapest, and adding capacity to Prague. Our seasonal Bangkok services from our Vancouver trans-Pacific hub become year-round, solidifying our position as the only airline with non-stop, continual service to Thailand from the North American continent. In all, these strategic additions reinforce Air Canada’s global network as one of the most wide-reaching from North America, connecting our customers to all six inhabited continents,” concluded Galardo. "Canadians will enjoy more travel options, greater convenience, and stronger connections to Europe and Asia with Air Canada’s new destinations in 2026. These expanded routes mean easier access to the places people want to go—whether for business, leisure, or to visit family. And as more passengers take flight, they promote trade and tourism, supporting jobs across the country, and helping us grow a stronger Canadian economy,” said the Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Transport and Internal Trade. “Air Canada’s expanded network is more than new destinations—it’s a gateway to stronger trade, investment, and people-to-people ties. Most of Canada’s air cargo travels in the belly of passenger planes, so when we expand passenger routes, we’re also expanding trade routes—moving Canadian goods faster, farther, and more reliably. These new connections to Europe and Asia give Canadian businesses better access to key markets, strengthen our global competitiveness, and build on what was already a record year for Canadian air cargo. Stronger connectivity in the skies means stronger growth on the ground, and ensures Canada remains a leader in the global economy,” said Maninder Sidhu, Minister of International Trade, Government of Canada. Air Canada to Gradually Resume Service after Reaching a Mediated Settlement with its Flight Attendant Union
Air Canada said it will gradually restart its operations today after reaching a mediated agreement with the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) through a process overseen by a mutually agreed-to mediator, William Kaplan. Mediation discussions were begun on the basis that the union commit to have the airline’s 10,000 flight attendants immediately return to work, allowing the airline to resume the operations of Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge, which have been grounded since August 16. “The suspension of our service is extremely difficult for our customers. We deeply regret and apologize for the impact on them of this labour disruption. Our priority now is to get them moving as quickly as possible. Restarting a major carrier like Air Canada is a complex undertaking. Full restoration may require a week or more, so we ask for our customers’ patience and understanding over the coming days. I assure them that everyone at Air Canada is doing everything possible to enable them to travel soon,” said Michael Rousseau, President and Chief Executive Officer of Air Canada. The first flights are scheduled for the evening of August 19, but customers are advised that the airline’s return to full, regular service may require seven-to-ten days as aircraft and crew are out of position. During this process, some flights will be cancelled over the next seven to ten days until the schedule is stabilized. Only customers with confirmed bookings whose flights are shown as operating should go to the airport (check your flight’s status on aircanada.com or on the Air Canada mobile app before going to the airport). Air Canada will offer options to those with cancelled flights, including obtaining a full refund or receiving a credit for future travel. The carrier will also offer to rebook customers on other airlines, although capacity is currently limited due to the peak summer travel season. As is customary, Air Canada will not comment on the agreement until the ratification process is complete. During any ratification or under the binding arbitration process, a strike or lockout is not possible, meaning customers can plan, book and travel with Air Canada with certainty.
Striking Air Canada flight attendants disrupt flights
Air Canada's striking flight attendants on Sunday refused a government-backed labor board's order to return to work, forcing the airline to delay restarting its operations and leaving its passengers in limbo. The Canadian Union of Public Employee said the 10,000 Air Canada attendants it represents would remain on strike, calling the order unconstitutional and "designed to protect the airline's profit." Instead, it invited Air Canada - the country's largest airline - back to the table to "negotiate a fair deal." In response, the airline said it would delay plans to restart operations from Sunday until Monday evening. The refusal by the union to obey the order left many travelers at Toronto Pearson International Airport confused and frustrated on Sunday afternoon. Many of them were camped out in airport lounges, uncertain whether when and if flights would resume or whether Air Canada would make tentative arrangements. "We are kind of left to figure it out for ourselves and fend for ourselves with no recourse or options provided by Air Canada at this time," said Elizabeth Fourney of Vancouver. Francesca Tondini, a 50-year-old from Italy, said she was about to return home after visiting Canada when her flight was canceled on Saturday and again on Sunday. When she asked Air Canada when the flight would finally depart, the airline responded, "maybe tomorrow, maybe Tuesday, maybe Friday, maybe Saturday - they don't know!," she said. The flight attendants began their strike early on Saturday morning, after negotiations that had dragged on for months reached an impasse. In anticipation, the airline canceled most of its 700 daily flights, forcing more than 100,000 travelers to scramble for alternatives. Within hours of the strike declaration, the Canada Industrial Relations Board complied with a request by Jobs Minister Patty Hajdu and ordered binding arbitration. The Canada Labour Code gives the government the power to ask the CIRB to impose such an order in the interest of protecting the economy. Government acts Air Canada had encouraged the government to act, while CUPE had pushed for a negotiated solution, saying binding arbitration would take pressure off the airline. "The federal government has entrusted a board to administer these rules in the Canadian Labor Code, and if you defy them, you are transgressing and essentially violating the law," said Rafael Gomez, a professor of employment relations at the University of Toronto. It is exceedingly rare for a union to defy a back-to-work order. In 1978, Canadian postal workers refused to comply with back-to-work legislation, resulting in fines and the jailing of their union leader for contempt of Parliament. The government's best option is to go to court to enforce the order and secure a contempt order if the union refused to back down, said Michael Lynk, professor emeritus at Western University's Faculty of Law in London, Ontario. "The union leadership could face the same consequences as what happened 45 years ago. It could be fines against the union ... potential of jail time for the union leaders," he said. The minority Liberal government could also try to pass back-to-work legislation, but that would require support of political rivals and approval in both houses of parliament, which is on break until Sept. 15. "Like many Canadians, the minister is monitoring this situation closely," Jennifer Kozelj, Hajdu's press secretary, said in a statement. "The Canada Industrial Relations Board (the Board) is an independent tribunal. Please refer to them regarding your question," she added in response to questions about the union's defiance of the order and about the refusal of the board's leader, a former Air Canada counsel, to recuse herself from the decision. The CIRB did not respond to a request for comment. The government, under former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, intervened last year to head off rail and dock strikes that threatened to cripple the economy. Lynk said the CUPE was also likely to file a legal challenge to the order. The government's use of its extraordinary power to force binding arbitration through CIRB, called Section 107, is relatively new. Unions have criticized the provision, saying such interference favors employers and denies their right to collective bargaining. The most contentious issue has been the union's demand for compensation for time spent on the ground between flights and when helping passengers board. Attendants are largely paid only when their plane is moving. Source: Reuters News

Air Canada’s ground operations at Québec City to become fully electronic by end 2025
Air Canada announced today that its ground operations in Québec City will be the airline’s first station in Canada to achieve 100% electrification of its GSE fleet across all main categories by the end of 2025. (CNW Group/Air Canada) To mark Earth Month, Air Canada announced that its ground operations in Québec City will be the airline's first station in Canada to achieve 100% electrification of its GSE fleet across all main categories by the end of 2025. This milestone will represent a complete transition from fossil fuel-powered equipment to electric alternatives for all baggage and ramp tractors, belt loaders, power stows, container loaders and aircraft tractors. This transition will eliminate Air Canada's use of fossil fuel equipment in these key GSE categories at this station. This is a step forward toward achieving Air Canada's climate-related ambition that sets out mid-term targets in support of its long-term aspirational goal of net-zero GHG emissions by 2050. Those mid-term targets are 20% GHG net reductions from its air operations and 30% GHG net reductions from its ground operations, both compared to a 2019 baseline, by 2030. "The focus of Earth Month 2025 is Renewable Energy and with Québec's renewable hydroelectric power, it is fitting that the city of Québec is our first fully electric capable station. This project demonstrates the successful collaboration between Air Canada and the YQB airport authority in developing the necessary charging infrastructure to support the transition to a zero direct emission electric GSE (eGSE) fleet powered by Québec's renewable energy grid," said Michael Rousseau, President and CEO at Air Canada. "Achieving the clean energy transition for aviation will require collaboration and efforts from all stakeholders. We accept our role as Canada's flag carrier, and acknowledge that aviation plays a critical role in global connectivity and socio-economic growth. We are committed to a coordinated approach for this long-term energy transition as we operate within an ecosystem of manufacturers, suppliers, airports, and governments, all of whom play an integral part in this important initiative," Mr. Rousseau continued. "The electrification of Air Canada's ground operations at YQB represents a concrete and significant step in reducing the impact of airport ground activities on the environment. This project was made possible thanks to close collaboration between our teams, and is perfectly in line with our commitment to reduce the environmental footprint of our operations, as well as to provide the support and tools necessary for our airline partners to achieve their GHG reduction objectives. We are proud that YQB is the first Air Canada station to take this important step towards environmental sustainability," states Stéphane Poirier, President and CEO of YQB. "Québec City is delighted with this initiative, which makes our airport the first Air Canada station in the country to electrify its main ground support equipment. This transition testifies to the commitment of our institutions and companies to innovate while taking into account current and future energy concerns. We are proud to see YQB, a strategic hub, support the evolution of the air transport industry and actively participate in initiatives aimed at reducing our environmental footprint," adds Bruno Marchand, Mayor of Québec City. Over the last several years, Air Canada has been progressively retiring and replacing older fossil-fuel powered ground equipment across Canada with more efficient electric ground equipment. The airline now has more than 900 pieces of eGSE equipment, representing 35% of the GSE fleet across all categories. Air Canada's ground fleet includes proven electric alternatives that support operational efficiency and emissions reductions. While some operations still require fossil-fuel powered equipment, Air Canada continues to work closely with the manufacturers to evaluate emerging technologies that come to market. The new eGSEs are designed to reduce direct emissions compared to internal combustion engine GSEs. They are expected to lower maintenance and spare part costs, and eliminate direct fuel costs, contributing to overall cost savings for Air Canada.
Philippine tourism department lauds launch of Air Canada’s Vancouver-Manila route
The Philippine Department of Tourism (DOT) believes that Air Canada’s new direct route between Vancouver and Manila will result in a significant boost in leisure and business tourism. Passengers aboard the maiden Vancouver to Manila flight arrived at Terminal 3 of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Pasay City on Thursday, 3rd April. The DOT prepared a festive welcome that included performances from local talents, as well as giving of leis and tokens. Air Canada will operate three nonstop flights per week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday throughout April and increase to four flights per week by May. The introduction of Air Canada’s non-stop flights between Vancouver and Manila reduces the previous 20-hour journey to just 12 to 14 hours. Air Canada managing director Rocky Lo pointed out that the Philippines is a fast-growing market for the Canadian commercial aviation sector. Lo said: "The flight has solidified Air Canada's position as the North American airline, serving the most non-stop destination in this region, supporting Canada's Inter Pacific strategy." Lo added that Filipino students represent the third-largest overseas student population in Canada, underscoring the importance of direct flights for both educational and cultural exchanges. New opportunities Tourism secretary Christina Frasco opined that the new route will provide more opportunities for tourism and business, providing easier access for Filipino-Canadians to fly to Manila while further opening up the country to the Canadian market. She said: “The launch of this nonstop flight is to significantly boost leisure and business tourism, further contributing directly to our local economies and enhancing the livelihood of our communities.” The tourism secretary further pointed out that Canada plays a significant role in Philippine tourism as a source market. She said, "Being home to nearly 1,000,000 people of Filipino descent, Canada is one of the largest diasporas globally. And therefore, this inaugural Air Canada flight will further foster cultural connections between our countries and drive economic growth. So this inaugural flight represents more than just mere travel, for it symbolises a powerful bridge connecting our countries closer than ever before.” Based on DOT data from this week, the Philippines has welcomed 1,682,531 visitors this year, including 91,671 from Canada. In 2024, Canada ranked sixth in tourist arrivals in the Philippines, with 269,300 visitors contributing US$304.32 million to the national economy. Canadian ambassador to the Philippines David Hartman remarked that the new route was mounted in part due to the new and economic reforms in the Philippines. Hartman said: “Recognising the importance of this route and investing in a service that meets the growing demand for travel between North America and the Philippines. This flight not only reflects the deep ties between our nations, but it will also open new opportunities for trade, tourism, and overall people-to-people connections.”
Air Canada celebrates resumption of London Heathrow to Ottawa flights
Air Canada, Canada’s largest airline and flag carrier, took to the skies with its newest route, relaunching flights between London Heathrow and Ottawa. The new international service heralds a huge milestone, not only for Air Canada, but also for UK-Canada ties, being the only direct flight between the UK and Canada’s capital city. The first flight, AC889, departed Heathrow at 14:05 yesterday afternoon, following a small celebration at Heathrow’s Terminal 2, before touching down in Ottawa at 16:25 local time. This summer, flights will operate four times per week, departing London each Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday afternoon, arriving into the Ontarian city in just over seven hours*. On the return, flights depart Ottawa each Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday evening, before arriving into the British capital the next morning. Customers looking to cross the Atlantic in style can benefit from this new service until 25 October 2025, with flights operated by the airline’s state-of-the-art 787-9 Dreamliner fleet, featuring lie-flat seats in Business Class, and spacious Premium Economy and Economy cabins. Mark Galardo, Air Canada's Executive Vice President, Revenue & Network Planning and President, Cargo, said: “We are thrilled to resume our Ottawa trans-Atlantic services linking Canada’s capital city and London Heathrow, home to one of the world’s most iconic travel destinations and international gateways. “With Air Canada’s Heathrow to Ottawa flights offering easy access to and from Canada’s National Capital region, we are proud to be supporting international business and corporate travel, tourism, plus people visiting friends and family, and look forward to welcoming customers onboard.” Ross Baker, Heathrow’s Chief Customer Officer, said: “Heathrow is committed to offering passengers more choices than ever when it comes to traveling the world, and we are always looking to expand our global reach in collaboration with our airline partners. The launch of Air Canada’s new route to Canada’s capital demonstrates how the world’s most-connected airport is becoming even more connected.” Famed for its rich culture and accessibility to the great Ontarian outdoors, Ottawa is located between Toronto and Montreal and situated on the Rideau Canal - a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Established as Canada’s capital in 1857, Ottawa has evolved into one of the country’s most vibrant and exciting cities, with a walkable downtown, and an abundance of parks, restaurants, museums and galleries. Other highlights include the city’s stunning architecture, including the Canadian Parliament Buildings, and year-round events such as the Canadian Tulip Festival each May - the largest of its kind in the world. This summer, Air Canada will offer up to 63 weekly flights between Heathrow and Canada, with direct flights to Calgary, Halifax, Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver - and now Ottawa. Alongside smooth connections to a wide range of smaller cities across Canada, the airline’s global network offers Brits convenient options to connect via Canada to destinations in the US, Caribbean, South America and Mexico. Those flying through Air Canada’s hubs to the U.S. also benefit from US customs preclearance, allowing travellers to pre-clear all US immigration and customs formalities pre-departure, and therefore arrive in the US as a domestic passenger.
