Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet passes the 1bln passengers milestone

Boeing shared that the 787 Dreamliner fleet has surpassed 1 billion passengers faster than any widebody commercial airplane in history, accomplishing the feat in less than 14 years since entering service. The global 787 fleet of more than 1,175 airplanes has flown nearly 5 million flights covering more than 30 million flight hours. “This milestone would not have been possible without the trust and confidence of our customers in operating the 787, and we are incredibly grateful for each of them,” said Scott Stocker, Boeing 787 program vice president and general manager. “The 787 Dreamliner family was designed to connect people and places like never before. Flying over 1 billion passengers in this relatively short time is a testament to how the airplane has delivered on its promises to transform air travel with operational versatility, efficiency and comfort. This achievement reflects the dedication, talent and innovation of the teammates and partners who have brought the 787 family to life. To every operator flying the 787 and every one of the 1 billion passengers who have flown on a Dreamliner, thank you.” Join the celebration Boeing is inviting everyone connected to the 787, including operators, passengers, suppliers and Boeing employees to share their memories on social media using #Dreamliner. By the numbers: 787 Dreamliner since entering service in 2011 1 billion+ passengers, 1,175+ jets, nearly 5 million flights, 30+ million flight hours Bestselling passenger widebody: 2,000+ orders from 89 customers The Dreamliner fleet operates across 85+ countries at 520+ airports, including 425+ new nonstop routes to destinations that were never served previously 2,100 flights each day: 480,000+ passengers daily and about 14.5 million people a month On average, each 787 is in the air more than 12 hours per day — showcasing strong global demand and reliability. Air New Zealand sends its Dreamliner to Singapore for comprehensive retrofitting

Air New Zealand began the major refresh of its Boeing 787-9 fleet with the arrival of the first of 14 aircraft in Singapore on Sunday, 13 October. The Dreamliner with the registration code ZK-NZH is slated to be retrofitted with new cabin interiors. It will spend some time at ST Engineering, the airline’s heavy maintenance partner. During the process, it will have its existing interior stripped out and all-new products installed, including revamped seats in Economy and Premium Economy, and the redesigned Business Premier cabin, including the new Business Premier Luxe product. A necessary milestone  Baden Smith, Air New Zealand’s general manager of strategy, networks, and fleet, says the arrival of the aircraft in Singapore marked a key milestone for the much-anticipated project. Smith said: “In 2014, Air New Zealand was the launch customer for the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. A decade on, it feels fitting that we’re the first airline in the world to retrofit these aircraft nose-to-tail with a new interior. “This retrofit programme will see all the interiors removed, including the seats, inflight entertainment system, carpet, curtains, and lavatory wallpaper, before it’s all replaced with new product. “The aircraft will then come back to New Zealand where our team will spend a few weeks working through various checks and training before it officially enters the flying schedule in the next year.” One at at time Over the next two years, all 14 of the airline’s 787-9 aircraft will be retrofitted one at a time on a rolling schedule. Smith explained: “Once the first aircraft has been retrofitted and certified, the remaining aircraft will head to Singapore one by one. We’re retrofitting them one at a time to ensure we have enough aircraft to fly our schedule, and we aren’t disrupting customers’ travel plans. Rolling out this retrofit programme before we get our new aircraft also puts us in a good place to continue delivering an exceptional flying experience for our customers.” ST Engineering’s executive vice-president and head of aerospace MRO Tan Eng Shu added: “Being a long-standing MRO partner to Air New Zealand, we are able to support their Dreamliner fleet’s lifecycle requirements, from maintenance work to what would be the world’s first full cabin retrofit on a Boeing 787-9. We appreciate the opportunity and look forward to enhancing our partnership and being part of the new Dreamliner experience with Air New Zealand.”

flydubai Sets Sights on Australian Skies with New Dreamliner Fleet

Dubai’s flydubai is embarking on a unique expansion strategy, exploring potential routes for its upcoming Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet. With the first deliveries of these new widebodies scheduled within the next two years, the airline’s CEO has hinted at the possibility of Australian cities joining flydubai’s route map, a move that would set it apart from competitors and potentially attract new investors. Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Etihad, all of which have strong presences in Australian cities, already traverse the Middle Eastern skies. Yet flydubai is optimistic about carving out its niche in this competitive landscape, bringing a fresh perspective to the Middle East-Australia corridor. The airline’s ambition is backed by an order of 30 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners placed at the Dubai Airshow in November 2023, with the first of these birds expected to join the fleet by 2026. These new aircraft promise to extend flydubai’s reach well beyond the limits set by its exclusive fleet of Boeing 737s. The 737 MAX 8s, already operating at the edge of their range with destinations like Pattaya, Penang, and Zurich, will be complemented by the twin-aisle Dreamliner, capable of connecting passengers to more distant locales. Ghaith Al Ghaith, the visionary CEO of flydubai, shared his strategic vision for the 787s at the Arabian Travel Market event in Dubai. “The primary objective of the Boeing 787 will be to extend our reach to new markets,” he declared. The Dreamliners’ impressive range could soon bridge the gap between the Middle East and cities across Europe, Asia, and the Australian continent. This vision will surely capture industry professionals’ attention. flydubai has been gradually transitioning from its low-cost roots. It now offers a business-class experience and aligns more closely with its sister airline, Emirates. This includes shared loyalty programs and codeshare agreements, enhancing the value proposition for its customers. In a notable revelation, Al Ghaith also teased the introduction of a premium economy cabin on flydubai flights with the arrival of the 787s. This move mirrors Emirates’ premium economy offerings launched in 2023. However, amidst the excitement, a note of caution was sounded regarding the new fleet’s delivery timeline, with Al Ghaith acknowledging the potential for delays that could push back the 2026 service entry date. As flydubai prepares to welcome its new Dreamliners, the industry is poised for a significant shift. The addition of Australian destinations would bring new capacity to an already bustling market and potentially reshape the competitive landscape, especially with the expected entry of Riyadh Air in 2025. Currently operating a fleet of 86 Boeing 737 aircraft with an order backlog of over 130 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft due by 2035, flydubai has come a long way since its first Boeing order in 2008. With a network now spanning more than 120 destinations in 54 countries, the airline’s growth trajectory seems set to continue, reaching new heights and shores with its Dreamliner fleet.
