SmartLynx Airlines has received FAOC from FAA

SmartLynx Airlines, a globally acknowledged ACMI (Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance, Insurance), cargo and charter operator, has received the Foreign Air Operator Certificate (FAOC) granted by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) of the United States of America (USA). The certification allows the airline to begin operations to, from, and within the United States. The received Certificate acknowledges that SmartLynx aircraft registered under Latvian AOC (Air Operator Certificate) is compliant with the high standards and regulations of the United States. With the certification received, SmartLynx will now be able to support airlines that operate cross-continental full charter and ACMI flights to and from this destination. Edvinas Demenius, CEO of SmartLynx Airlines says: "Air operation Certificates are part of our infrastructure. It is crucial for an airline, especially ACMI, to have access to different regions. The USA is the biggest and one of the most regulated aviation markets in the world and being able to provide our services there brings a lot of value to the airline and boosts our competitiveness. Approximately a third of our fleet operates under Latvian AOC. Therefore, this step allows us to expand our operations and gives more flexibility."

FAA finds Hawaii Airline Unsafe

FAA finds Hawaii Airline Unsafe - Transair and Transair Express is Hawaii-based and operates between the Hawaiian islands. Freight, cargo, or passengers, all airlines should be safe. A cargo plane crashing on a populated area is not only killing the pilots but also the people on the ground. Specifically in the United States, air safety is something the country wants to lead the world. In the US State of Hawaii Rhoades Aviation may be closed down by the U.S. Department of Transportation. The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has proposed to revoke the air carrier certificate of Honolulu-based Rhoades Aviation Inc. for numerous alleged safety violations. The FAA alleges that Rhoades: Failed to maintain Safety Management System records; address issues the FAA found with its general operations manual; conduct proper safety risk management when addressing discrepancies in its aircraft loading, weight and balance, and runway analysis manuals; provide revised manuals to the FAA; provide safety-risk-management documentation when it submitted its administration manual. Operated two Boeing 737s more than 900 times after failing to add the aircraft to its maintenance and inspection program. Operated a Boeing 737 airplane on 33 flights when it was not airworthy due to engine compressor fan blades that did not meet manufacturer standards. Committed numerous violations related to its FAA-required Safety Management System program, including failing to ensure that the program was properly implemented and performing in all areas of its organization. Conducted improper maintenance work on engine compressor fan blades and failed to properly document the work. Operating since 1982, the combined Transair and Transair Express all-cargo fleet of five Boeing 737 and five Bombardier SD3-60-300 aircraft fly daily to all major Hawaiian island destinations of Kauai, Maui, Kona, and Hilo with extended service to Lanai and Molokai. In addition, cargo charters are available to all points within the state of Hawaii. Click here to read: eTurboNews | eTN

Virgin Galactic receives FAA approval for commercial space trips

Virgin Galactic has made history, becoming the first space liner to be certified by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to carry passengers on its spaceplanes. The adjustment of the operator’s license held by the company since 2016 comes as Virgin Galactic prepares for its last three test flights, including the first fully crewed test flight in the coming months. Friday's announcement comes on the heels of Virgin Galactic's first powered test flight from its Spaceport America, New Mexico facility of its VSS Unity spaceplane on May 22, 2021, which was carried aloft by the VMS Eve mothership. After being released, Unity fired its hybrid rocket engine, sending it on a suborbital trajectory at a speed of Mach 3 (1,985 knots, 2,284 mph, 3,675 km/h) to an altitude of 55.5 miles (89 km). This was the third Virgin Galactic flight to reach the edge of space and the first from New Mexico. During the flight, engineers gathered data on the performance of the vehicle's upgraded horizontal stabilizers and flight controls, as well as the cabin environment, to make sure they were working as predicted. The new flight systems give the pilot better control and will be incorporated in future Virgin Galactic spacecraft. In addition to testing the flight systems, the May test included three paying research projects that were part of NASA’s Flight Opportunities Program. These microgravity experiments required the pilots to keep Unity on a predetermined trajectory. "We’re incredibly pleased with the results of our most recent test flight, which achieved our stated flight test objectives," Michael Colglazier, Chief Executive Officer of Virgin Galactic. "The flight performed flawlessly, and the results demonstrate the safety and elegance of our flight system. Today’s approval by the FAA of our full commercial launch license, in conjunction with the success of our May 22 test flight, gives us confidence as we proceed toward our first fully crewed test flight this summer."

Passenger rights group asks Congress to demand transparency from Boeing and FAA

Airline passenger rights group FlyersRights.org submitted a letter to US Congress to ask for transparency from the FAA and Boeing in their quest to address the 737 MAX’s deadly flaws and determine whether to unground the plane. To date, the FAA has heavily redacted all documents it has disclosed to FlyersRights.org in litigation over a Freedom of Information Act request. The letter notes, “Without public disclosure and independent experts weighing in, Boeing’s deceitful actions before and after the two MAX crashes will be front of mind for passengers when they board any Boeing aircraft. Not Boeing’s assurances. Not the FAA’s imprimatur of safety. Certainly not when the same people who initially certified the MAX as safe are still making the decisions, which include, most disturbingly, secrecy.” - eTurboNews | Trends | Travel News
