Airlines must embrace real-time pricing to maximise revenue: Javier Jiménez

Speaking at the World Aviation Festival 2024 , Airnguru COO Javier Jiménez discussed the pressing challenges airlines face in optimising pricing strategies and highlighted the need for real-time pricing adjustments to better capture customers’ maximum willingness to pay.  He pointed out that traditional airline revenue management systems, while dynamic, often fail to address real-time demand fluctuations and price elasticity.  Following the session, Jiménez explained: “Even though airline revenue management systems dynamically adjust prices based on inventory optimisation algorithms, there has always been a challenge in optimising prices according to the maximum willingness to pay of each demand segment. While inventory-based algorithms adjust prices, they often fail to capture price elasticity and real-time demand fluctuations effectively.  “This limitation stems from the fact that pricing strategy evaluations have traditionally been done through a batch process, relying on retrospective comparisons, rather than leveraging real-time data to dynamically adjust to evolving market conditions. Moving towards more real-time adjustments is crucial for aligning pricing strategies with actual customer demand and maximising revenue potential.”

SITA Intelligence and Targeting provides real-time risk assessment

SITA has unveiled its most advanced intelligence and targeting offering yet, providing the backbone for dynamic and integrated border management, helping governments identify and manage risks long before they reach their land, sea, and air borders. Today governments face the arduous task of balancing the benefits of surging international travel that is close to pre-pandemic levels with increased security and health threats. A key challenge is having the correct information well in advance of travel to make informed decisions on who can cross their border before they pose a threat. SITA Intelligence and Targeting uses advanced risk assessment methods and artificial intelligence to significantly reduce the time needed to extract strategic risk analysis and operational situational awareness across multiple data streams, providing valuable intelligence to act before high-risk individuals arrive in the country. SITA’s solution is designed around a four-phase intelligence methodology – acquire, augment, analyze, action – that maps directly to government customers’ operational environments. The methodology is founded on the premise that intelligence must be actionable while frontline operations must be able to report on outcomes, improve data quality, and update intelligence sources to deliver greater accuracy in future operations. Jeremy Springall, SVP, SITA AT BORDERS, said: “One of the most valuable lessons we learned from the COVID-19 pandemic was the importance of border agencies having the right tools to reconfigure policy rules to address ever-changing threats quickly. These threats change on a daily, sometimes even hourly, basis. As a result, government agencies need far greater flexibility and control. This is exactly what we have delivered with the vastly enhanced SITA Intelligence and Targeting, creating a pre-screening capability to support our government customers’ direct targeting operations and drive down risk as early and as far from the border as possible.” Using Intelligence and Targeting, border agencies can dynamically reconfigure rules and profiles to incorporate new intelligence and respond to new – and constantly changing – threats. Governments can now identify and respond to threats far more quickly, and pre-clear travelers in real time. Over the past 25 years, SITA has invested in building a specialist business unit to support the unique and complex challenges of its 70+ government customers responsible for their country’s border security.

How ixigo’s new ‘Vaccine Slot Finder’ will display real-time slot availability from CoWIN site

Vaccination drive against COVID-19 in India is currently in full swing. With citizens flocking to the government portals to find and book relevant slots, it sometimes becomes a challenge to get your preferred slot with such high demand. To increase the chances of getting a vaccination appointment, ixigo has launched ‘Vaccine Slot Finder’ tool on its flights & trains app displaying real-time slot availability from the CoWIN website. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M5wnc8wxGL0 This tool can be easily  accessed in the ‘What’s New’ section on the app  by tapping on the ‘Find vaccine slots’ option. One can select their area pin code or the district along with the age group and specify the dose they qualify for. A user can further filter the search results by selecting the vaccine type (Covishield or Covaxin), and whether they are opting for a ‘free’ or ‘paid’ vaccine centre. If a slot is available, they will be redirected to the coWIN website to book the appointment. In case of unavailability of a slot, users get an option to select ‘notify me when slots are available’ which will enable push notifications for whenever the slots are available in their area. Commenting on the launch, Rajnish Kumar, CTO and director of ixigo said: “With this initiative we want to support the government's efforts in accelerating mass vaccinations by providing our users seamless access to vaccine slots. Timely vaccinations will help ease anxiety and encourage safe and free movement of people going forward.”

Real-time performance data sharing of hotels gets easier

ProfitSword, developer of business intelligence software and data integration services in the hospitality industry, has announced the implementation of its ProfitSage operational and financial reporting solution by J Hospitality and Development. A New Orleans-based development and management company that focuses on creating innovative solutions for hospitality, residential and commercial properties, J Hospitality now leverages the solution to ensure the automated and accurate sharing of real-time performance data at all independent hotels in its portfolio. “By implementing the ProfitSage platform, we have been able to equip all of our independent properties with a financial experience that can cater to each hotel’s specific data needs,” said Karl Bulot at J Hospitality and Development. “Being able to access the right performance data provides a significant competitive advantage in identifying opportunities or risks present within a hotel or its regional market. Customisation of reports allows a corporate office overseeing multiple properties, the real-time ability to devise and maintain a successful company-wide growth strategy,” he added. “Some of the biggest challenges for any organisation overseeing multiple properties are gathering the sheer volume of data from disparate sources in an organized way, a lack of real-time key performance indicators, the lack of systems and processes required to manage data, and the ability to drive a data culture to achieve desired results,” said Paul Bennie, director of business development at ProfitSword.

Rough riders: IATA introduces real-time turbulence forecasting

IATA (International Air Transport Association) has announced the launch of its new Turbulence Aware tool. The new resource has been developed to strengthen carriers' abilities to forecast, track and avoid turbulence. Today airlines rely upon pilot reports and weather advisories to mitigate the impact of turbulence on their operations. These tools have limitations and currently there is no standard turbulence scale, with reports based upon the subjective assessment of pilots – dependent on factors such as pilot experience and aircraft size - who describe conditions as light, moderate or severe. Turbulence Aware works by pooling data from contributing airlines. This data is then consolidated into a single, source database which is accessible to participants. Turbulence Aware data is turned into actionable information when fed into an airline’s dispatch or airborne alerting systems. The result is a global, real-time, detailed and objective information for pilots and operations professionals to manage turbulence. "The airline industry has always cooperated on safety" Alexandre de Juniac, IATA’s director general and CEO, said: “Turbulence Aware is a great example of the potential for digital transformation in the airline industry. The airline industry has always cooperated on safety—its number one priority. Big data is now turbocharging what we can achieve. "In the case of Turbulence Aware, the more precise forecasting of turbulence will provide a real improvement for passengers, whose journeys will be even safer and more comfortable.” Collaborative approach The challenge of managing turbulence is expected to grow as climate change continues to impact weather patterns. This has implications for both safety and efficiency of flight. Delta Air Lines, United Airlines and Aer Lingus have already signed contracts. Delta Air Lines’ senior vice president of flight operations, Jim Graham said: “IATA’s collaborative approach to creating Turbulence Aware with open source data means that airlines will have access to data to better mitigate turbulence. "Using Turbulence Aware in conjunction with Delta’s proprietary Flight Weather Viewer app is expected to build on the significant reductions we’ve seen already to both turbulence-related crew injuries and carbon emissions year-over-year.”
