Agoda Reveals: Khao Lak, Seoul and Perhentian Islands are the Top Destinations for Slow Travel

With slow travel being one of the most talked about travel trends, digital travel platform Agoda shares the top Asian destinations for slow travel for longer stays. Thailand’s Khao Lak takes the crown as the tourist destination where travelers spend the most time. Searches for slow travel have grown threefold in the past five years, according to Google Trends *. Slow travel is an approach to travel that encourages travelers to stay longer at their destination, allowing them to create deeper connections with local culture and people, resulting in meaningful travel experiences. Across eight Asian markets the destinations with the highest average length of stay are Khao Lak in Thailand, Seoul in South Korea, Perhentian Islands in Malaysia, Tokyo in Japan, Siargao Island in the Philippines, Pekanbaru in Indonesia, Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, and Ahmedabad in India respectively. Agoda analyzed the travel platform’s booking data from the first three months of 2024 to compile the rank**. In India, Ahmedabad is where travelers are spending the most consecutive time on average, with Goa and Faizabad rounding out the top three. When travelling internationally, travelers from India spend most time exploring Seoul in a quest for a slow travel experience. Krishna Rathi, Senior Country Director India Subcontinent and Maldives at Agoda shared, “It’s easy to understand why slow travel is one of the most fascinating travel trends right now. In today’s fast-paced world, many travelers will recognize the desire to use their holiday to disconnect from day-to-day life and form a deeper connection with the people and places they visit. It’s something we love to see and encourage at Agoda, as we are passionate about bridging the world through travel. For travelers looking to fully submerge in a holiday destination, whether it’s lazing around in a beach villa or settling in a chic city hotel, the destinations on our slow travel ranking are great places to start.” Some of the destinations on the list are also well-known favorites for shorter city breaks, but both the rural and urban destinations on the slow travel rank are worth spending an extended amount of time in. From swimming amidst the rich reefs in Perhentian Islands to having a feast in the streets in Ho Chi Minh City, here are some ways for travelers to gain a deeper local experience in these eight destinations. 1. Khao Lak, Thailand Surfing paradise Khao Lak is Asia’s most popular slow travel destination, and for good reason. Its many lesser known but beautiful beaches and nature spots are perfect places to unwind and let any day-to-day worries drift away. In the evening, the bars and restaurants around Phet Kasem road are great places to enjoy some live Thai folk music and perhaps even a game of snooker against the local talent. 2. Seoul, South Korea Seoul, a vibrant and dynamic city, also conceals isolated corners for those looking to enjoy a slower pace. The quiet backstreets of Buam-dong offer a unique mix of classy modern cafes and nostalgic shops from the 1960s-70s, like traditional rice mills and barbershops. The tranquil Baeksasil Valley invites travelers to leave behind the city's rapid pace and immerse themselves in a refreshing natural retreat with pristine water and a well-preserved forest. Literature lovers can explore Seongbuk-dong which houses the historic Hanok living quarters of famous Korean writers from as early as the 1930s. 3. Perhentian Islands, Malaysia Escape to the Perhentian Islands, Malaysia's quintessential beach paradise off Terengganu's coast, which offer slow-paced tropical bliss. Where crystalline waters meet soft sandy shores, the islands of Perhentian Kecil and Perhentian Besar make an ideal sanctuary for relaxation and aquatic adventures like snorkeling and diving amidst colorful coral reefs. Embrace the untouched allure of Perhentian Kecil's Adam & Eve Beach, accessible only by a trek through lush landscapes. In this secluded spot, reconnect with nature's splendor in undisturbed peace. 4. Tokyo, Japan A bustling megacity that is a top global destination, Tokyo is known for being impossible to experience in one trip. That’s why it’s best to slow it down and take the time to immerse in the little pleasures of Japan’s capital. Experience Tokyo’s charms like a local by wandering around some of the lesser-known neighborhoods such as Shimokitazawa for vintage shopping, Yanaka for a traditional atmosphere, and the bohemian neighborhood of Koenji for some alternative music and punk rock. And end the day by grabbing a craft cocktail in a tiny alleyway in Sangenjaya. 5. Siargao Islands, Philippines Siargao Island, a serene gem off Surigao del Norte, lures travelers away from the flurry of city life. Dubbed the "Surfing Capital of the Philippines," its famed surf spot 'Cloud 9' faces the open seas and entices surf enthusiasts with some of the best waves year-round. The island’s size notwithstanding, Siargao has an abundance of natural marvels worth exploring. Traverse the island on a rented motorcycle, dive into the sculpted Magpupungko Rock Pools, and unravel the mystique of the glowing Hagukan Cave amid Sohoton Cove's splendor. Here, even a month isn't enough to satisfy the lure of discovery - Siargao calls for repeat visits. 6. Pekanbaru, Indonesia Pekanbaru, the bustling capital of Riau province on Sumatra Island, beautifully intertwines vibrant city life with rich Malay culture and history. Idyllic locations like Lake Siak and Lake Kayangan offer a leisurely day out on the waters; rent a boat, swim, or simply unwind among the picturesque surroundings. The historic alleyways of Kampung Bandar are lined with wooden houses and welcoming locals. For a cultural experience, the Muara Takus Buddhist temple complex nearby transports travelers back to the past. 7. Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam Famous for its bustling streets, Ho Chi Minh city pulses with vibrant energy that’s best enjoyed when embraced fully. Step into the rhythm of the locals and experience the city slowing down by enjoying a traditional Ca Phe Sua Da, Vietnamese coffee, in the morning. Taste the culture of Vietnam by indulging in the epic street food variety and then take a break from the buzz and seek solace among a collection of over a thousand trees in one of the city's oldest parks, Tao Dan Park. Saigon presents a diverse array of experiences to be discovered at a relaxed tempo. 8. Ahmedabad, India Ahmedabad invites explorers to take the time to discover its old city lanes, colonial-era havelis, and the iconic City Walls. There are authentic flavors to be discovered at Manek Chowk market and there's solace to be found along the Sabarmati River. A visit to Gandhi's Sabarmati Ashram and the Calico Museum of Textiles connects travelers to the city's history, and legacy of its rich cotton textile industry. Whether for slow travel, short trips, or multi-destination travel itineraries, Agoda is committed to helping travelers to see the world with great value deals on over 4 million holiday properties, in addition to flights and activities. Deal hunters planning a slow travel trip are encouraged to look out for the many long stay deals available on Agoda.

Jetstar Launches New Flights Linking Brisbane with Seoul and Osaka

Jetstar is launching additional flights between Brisbane and Seoul, South Korea, and Osaka, Japan, accordingly, significantly boosting the number of international low-fares seats in south-east Queensland. Jetstar will fly three times weekly nonstop from Brisbane to Seoul (Incheon) and four times nonstop from Brisbane to Osaka (Kansai) using its fleet of Boeing 787 Dreamliners. The launch of the Brisbane to Osaka route will create the only direct service between the two cities. With a total annual passenger volume of up to 240,000, the two new routes are projected to inject millions of dollars into the tourist sector of south-east Queensland. The flights are made possible through the Attracting Aviation Investment Fund (AAIF), a programme that the Queensland government and airports worked together in order to boost the state’s tourism industry. The launches follow Jetstar’s partnership with Brisbane Airport, which has already resulted in new services between Brisbane and Tokyo (Narita) and extra low-cost seats on Bali and Auckland routes. Jetstar Group CEO Stephanie Tully said the airline has experienced high demand for international travel to and from south-east Queensland. “These new routes are expected to be popular in both directions, with inbound visitation from South Korea and Japan expected to inject millions of dollars into the Sunshine State’s economy. For Queenslanders, more than 240,000 fare seats across the two routes will allow them to explore these incredibly beautiful cities.” Brisbane Airport CEO Gert-Jan de Graaff stated, “The Brisbane launch of two new Jetstar routes within two days is fantastic news for tourism and jobs in Queensland. These flights further solidify our thriving partnership with Jetstar, contributing to the most significant boost in affordable fares for Queenslanders and valued visitors. BNE now has direct connections to 29 international destinations and 61 airports in Australia.” Queensland Tourism Minister Michael Healy said, “Jetstar’s new direct flights between Osaka and Seoul will bring thousands of tourists to Brisbane. “Latest figures show South Korea is a stand-out growth market for Queensland, up by 40 per cent to 56,000 visitors a year, “Japan is our second largest source market worth $146.5m a year in overnight visitor expenditure, “These new services are supported by the Queensland Government’s Attracting Aviation Investment Fund (AAIF) to stimulate the state’s visitor economy.” Flight schedule  Brisbane to Seoul (Incheon) from 1 Feb 2024* The post Jetstar Launches New Flights Linking Brisbane with Seoul and Osaka first appeared on Stray Nomad Travel News.

It is worth noting that Go City has ambitious plans to enhance the Seoul passes by incorporating additional seasonal experiences and attractions located on the outskirts of Seoul in 2024. On the street food tour through Seoul's cultural hub of Insa-dong and the lively Gwangjang Market, people can tuck into Korean blood sausages and mung bean pancakes packed with ingredients. The hearty pan-fried cakes are an essential part of Korean cuisine, made with ground mung beans, kimchi, rice, eggs, pork, and vegetables and full of seasonings. Aside from tasty food and tipples like Makgeolli, a cloudy, unfiltered rice wine, the three-hour tour is also a visual delight. Ambling along the alleys adjacent to Insa-dong's old cultural street, travellers can admire traditional Korean Hanok houses alongside old cafes and teahouses. Cookin' Nanta musical comedy show Nanta's theatrical, kitchen-based show has rightfully wowed tourists for over 25 years. Arguably the most spectacular sight, however, is the view across the barbed wire and electric fences to North Korea and its Propaganda Village, a supposedly collective farm where no one lives. High-powered binoculars and stories that transport people back in time to the Korean and Cold War are included. Vividly told, they almost make one hear the whistling sounds of falling bombs. Traditional Korean costume rental before visiting royal palaces Known for its illustrious history, Seoul awaits with royal palaces. Tourists clad in rented, traditional Korean costumes can snap pictures at either Gyeongbokgung or Changdeokgung Palace to take a piece of South Korea home. The hotel also features state-of-the-art meeting and event facilities, an indoor swimming pool, a 24-hour fitness center with a fully equipped Pilates studio, a driving range, a tennis court and a sauna. “With a full-service hotel sitting alongside a spacious residence, we are ready to extend a double dose of comfort and care, whether to the business traveler here in town for a few days, or the leisure traveler who is looking to clock in a longer stay,” said Peta Ruiter, general manager of DoubleTree by Hilton Seoul Pangyo. DoubleTree by Hilton Seoul Pangyo operates an urban rooftop bee farm with the aim of sustainable beekeeping that helps protect and maintain viable populations of thriving colonies. With its own harvest, the hotel offers a wide spectrum of honey-infused culinary creations, ranging from cocktails with a natural honeycomb to honey cakes and "Bee My Honey" afternoon tea sets. As part of DoubleTree by Hilton’s ‘Do Good, Feel Good’ program and as an extension of its CARE culture, the hotel also organizes weekly workshops to help educate children to care. Helping young ones understand the importance of bees to the ecosystem aims to instill a sense of purpose that travelling with awareness can further fulfill. The property is also amongst the first in South Korea to obtain Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) Chain of Custody certifications, offering guests sustainably-sourced seafood across its restaurants. DoubleTree by Hilton has made several strides towards a rapid expansion across the region. Apart from its debut in Korea, Hilton also marked  its 50th DoubleTree by Hilton property in Greater China with the opening of DoubleTree by Hilton Kunming Airport in December 2022, and soon after announced the opening of its first hotel in Japan’s Hokuriku region with the debut of DoubleTree by Hilton Toyama in January 2023, and first DoubleTree by Hilton property in Kyoto with DoubleTree by Hilton Kyoto Higashiyama in August 2023. In 2024, a bevy of openings are anticipated, including new DoubleTree by Hilton properties opening in Jakarta, as part of a mixed-use development in Bintaro Jaya; Osaka, the first DoubleTree by Hilton property in Osaka; and Vientiane, Hilton’s first property in Laos.
