Robin Guess / Shutterstock.comStarlux Airlines has announced plans to expand its fleet to 48 aircraft by the end of 2027, with a focus on exploring new routes in the US, Europe, and Australia. The airline's spokesperson, Liang Wen-long, confirmed that four aircraft are scheduled for delivery in November and December, including an Airbus A350-1000, an A330-900, and two A321neo aircraft. An additional six aircraft are expected by the end of 2027.
The expansion will enable Starlux to increase flights on existing routes and explore new destinations. In the US, potential new routes include New York, Chicago, Washington, DC, and Dallas. Prague is set to be the airline's first European destination, with Zurich, Barcelona, and Helsinki also under consideration. Australian destinations being evaluated include Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane.
Liang noted that planning European routes involves challenges related to air rights and airport time slots, necessitating alternative plans. The airline also plans to adjust winter capacity on routes to Sapporo and Hakodate in Japan, responding to strong passenger demand on its Sendai and Chiang Mai routes by deploying larger aircraft.
Kaohsiung will become Starlux's third operating base in Taiwan, with direct flights to Okinawa and Kobe planned to enhance its presence in southern Taiwan. The airline expects fourth-quarter revenue to increase by 40% to 50% year over year, driven by US travel demand during Thanksgiving and Christmas, as well as stronger cargo shipments.
Despite the positive outlook, rising fuel prices pose a challenge, with costs increasing from $80 (US$80) per barrel last year to as high as $170 (US$170) this year. Fuel now accounts for 30% of operating costs, impacting profitability. To manage fleet growth, Starlux will continue using financing arrangements like sale-leasebacks.
