Air Astana supports SAF development efforts in Kazakhstan

Air Astana with KazMunayGas co-financed a pre-feasibility study on the production and utilization of SAF in Kazakhstan, initiated by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and supported by the Aviation Administration of Kazakhstan. The study was carried out by ICF, a global advisory and technology services provider.

Air Astana is committed to becoming the most sustainable airline in the CIS and Central Asia and is dedicated to achieving net zero emissions by 2050. Additionally, Air Astana has committed to support the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines resolution, which sets a collective utilization target of 5% SAF by 2030.

The comprehensive study reviewed decarbonization strategies, analyzed the global SAF landscape, and examined both supply and demand dynamics along with feedstock availability. It also assessed SAF production technologies for their suitability in the local market and developed actionable recommendations for the next steps in SAF market development in Kazakhstan.
