Bohol is set to enhance its eco-tourism offerings with the introduction of sustainable whale shark interaction experiences. Governor Erico Aristotle Aumentado announced the signing of the Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR) for Provincial Ordinance No. 2026-004, known as “The Enhanced Sustainable Marine Wildlife Interaction Ordinance of the Province of Bohol.” This ordinance establishes a framework for regulated whale shark activities, ensuring the protection of marine wildlife.
The new regulations aim to guide tour operators in offering whale shark interactions responsibly. "We advise all operators to follow these regulations so that we can preserve and protect our marine wildlife," Aumentado stated. This initiative reflects Bohol's commitment to balancing tourism development with marine conservation.
Previously focused in Lila, whale shark activities will now expand under the updated guidelines, offering travellers unique marine encounters. Beyond whale sharks, Bohol offers a range of eco-tourism experiences, including snorkelling, diving, island-hopping, and cultural heritage tours.
Bohol is renowned for its Chocolate Hills, pristine beaches, and tarsier sanctuaries. It is also the Philippines' first UNESCO Global Geopark, celebrated for its limestone landscapes and rich biodiversity. The Bohol-Panglao International Airport, designed with sustainability in mind, serves as the gateway to these attractions, featuring solar energy systems and rainwater collection to reduce its carbon footprint.
As Bohol continues to develop its eco-tourism sector, it invites visitors to explore its natural and cultural wonders responsibly, ensuring that every experience is both meaningful and sustainable
