The National Geographic Society has unveiled its new Museum of Exploration in Washington DC, marking a significant milestone in its history.
Located at the Society's revamped global headquarters, the museum offers an innovative experience that transforms passive viewing into an active journey, inviting visitors to engage with scientific breakthroughs and historical narratives.
The museum's opening coincides with the debut of "Wonders of Our World Ocean," a 17-minute outdoor nighttime experience. This multisensory journey, developed with Moment Factory, uses high-resolution LED screens, reactive floor projections, and the world's largest smart glass installation to create dynamic oceanic projections. Jill Tiefenthaler, CEO of the National Geographic Society, remarked, "The Museum of Exploration tells the story of the National Geographic Society, our history, our mission, and what we aspire to be."
Inside, the museum spans over 100,000 square feet, featuring permanent and temporary exhibitions. Highlights include the Rolex Explorers Landing, the Archives supported by Lilly Endowment Inc, and the National Geographic Learning Launchpad. Visitors can also explore the Jack and Laura Dangermond Esri Geoverse and the Photo Ark Animals of Earth gallery.
The museum's grand opening weekend, from 26 to 28 June, includes interactive activities, live performances, and conversations with renowned explorers like Sylvia Earle and Albert Lin. The museum is open daily, with general admission tickets starting at $29.99, and an additional $10 for the nighttime experience. Visitors are encouraged to purchase tickets online in advance
