Austrian Airlines has launched its first-ever direct flights to Ponta Delgada on São Miguel in the Azores, marking a significant addition to its summer schedule.
Operating every Tuesday from Vienna until early September, the flights cover a distance of 3,770 km, making it the longest route in the airline's continental fleet. The Azores, often dubbed the "Hawaii of Europe," are renowned for their stunning volcanic landscapes and appeal to outdoor enthusiasts.
The new route not only offers travellers a unique destination but also presents operational challenges due to its length and location in the North Atlantic. Captain Christoph Mosser, who commanded the inaugural flight, highlighted the extensive preparations required for this route, including fuel management and alternate airport planning. "Our experience operating long-haul flights across the North Atlantic has been invaluable," Mosser stated, emphasising the Azores as a "truly unique holiday destination."
The introduction of this route reflects Austrian Airlines' commitment to expanding its network and offering diverse travel experiences. The Azores' moderate summer temperatures and rapidly changing weather add to the islands' allure, providing a captivating backdrop for visitors. As part of the Lufthansa Group, Austrian Airlines continues to enhance its service offerings, connecting Austria with Europe and beyond
