Europe's largest hostel chain, a&o Hostels, has published its 2025 Sustainability Report, revealing a 1.9% reduction in CO2e emissions per overnight stay, now at 3.58 kilograms. Despite this achievement, total emissions rose by 3.1% due to the opening of four new properties. The report highlights a&o's commitment to sustainability, with 43 of its 46 locations being conversions of existing buildings.
The report, presented by ESG Director Arben Maliqi, outlines a&o's focus on reducing direct emissions through energy efficiency, renewable energy, and waste reduction. CEO Oliver Winter stated, "The travel industry is constantly evolving, and a&o is actively shaping this transformation by combining growth with our commitment to further reducing energy consumption and using resources responsibly."
In collaboration with the Technical University of Berlin, a&o is conducting a life cycle assessment for its new Berlin location, intended as a blueprint for future projects. Key initiatives include 100% green electricity, digital guest registration, and support for cultural heritage projects.
In 2025, a&o hosted nearly three million guests, accounting for 6.6 million overnight stays. The chain's top three locations with the lowest emissions per overnight stay are in Copenhagen and Berlin. Additionally, a&o invested $378,000 (378,000 euros) in employee training and supports various social and cultural projects.
The report also notes a&o's recognition with awards such as the "A World for Travel Societal Development Award" and a strong ESG profile rating from Sustainable Fitch. Since 2015, a&o has reduced CO2e emissions by 76%. The full report is available for download on their website
