Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul is spearheading efforts to enhance Thailand's tourism collaboration with western China during an official visit from 16 to 20 July 2026. The visit, which includes stops in Shanghai, Chengdu, and Beijing, aims to bolster air connectivity and tourism infrastructure between the two nations.

At the Thailand–China Sichuan Investment and Economic Forum 2026, the Prime Minister engaged with over 200 business leaders from western China. The Thai delegation included key figures such as Deputy Prime Ministers Ekniti Nitithanprapas and Sihasak Phuangketkeow, and Minister of Industry Varawut Silpa-archa. They were welcomed by Sichuan's Governor Shi Xiaolin and other provincial officials.

A significant focus of the visit is the strategic cooperation with Sichuan Airlines to restore and expand air routes, including the Chengdu–Chiang Mai service and potential new routes to Hua Hin and U-Tapao airports. This initiative aims to accommodate the increasing travel demand from western China.

Additionally, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is exploring a partnership with Meituan, a leading Chinese digital platform. This collaboration involves data exchange for market analysis and initiatives like the Thailand National Campaign and the Trusted Thailand programme to boost Chinese traveller confidence.

These efforts align with the policy of Surasak Phancharoenworakul, Minister of Tourism and Sports, to enhance tourism infrastructure and air connectivity. The initiatives are expected to support Thailand's tourism sector in the latter half of 2026 and into 2027, targeting over 5.13 million Chinese visitors and generating at least $7.9 billion (288.385 billion Baht) in revenue
