Riyadh Air has officially entered the Southeast Asian market with the launch of its inaugural service between Riyadh and Kuala Lumpur, marking a significant milestone in the Saudi carrier's international expansion strategy. The new nonstop route makes Kuala Lumpur Riyadh Air's first destination in Southeast Asia and strengthens air links between Saudi Arabia and Malaysia, a key tourism, business and investment partner in the ASEAN region.
The inaugural flight was celebrated at both King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh and Kuala Lumpur International Airport, with senior representatives from the airline, government and aviation sectors attending the launch ceremonies. Operating three times a week, the new service is expected to boost connectivity for business travellers, tourists and students while supporting growing trade and economic ties between the two countries. It also represents another step in Riyadh Air's ambition to build a global network connecting Saudi Arabia with major international destinations.
Tony Douglas, Chief Executive Officer of Riyadh Air, described the launch as a defining moment for the airline's expansion into Southeast Asia. He said the new route goes beyond linking two capital cities, serving as a strategic gateway between Saudi Arabia and the wider ASEAN region while supporting Vision 2030 through stronger business, tourism and educational connections. He added that the airline remains focused on delivering a digitally led travel experience as it continues to expand its international footprint.
The launch is also expected to strengthen Kuala Lumpur International Airport's position as a regional aviation hub, with Riyadh Air becoming the ninth Middle Eastern carrier to serve the Malaysian gateway. Dato' Mohd Izani Ghani, Managing Director of Malaysia Airports, said Riyadh Air's decision to make Kuala Lumpur its first destination in Southeast Asia is an important milestone for both the airport and Malaysia. He noted that the new service enhances connectivity with a region of growing importance for tourism, trade and investment, while giving travellers greater choice and reinforcing Kuala Lumpur International Airport's role as a gateway between Southeast Asia and the rest of the world. He added that Malaysia Airports looks forward to supporting Riyadh Air as it expands its presence and connectivity through Kuala Lumpur.
