American Airlines has been identified as the US airline most likely to mishandle checked luggage, according to the latest figures from the US Department of Transportation. The Air Travel Consumer Report, released in August, revealed that over 1 million bags were mishandled by US airlines in the first half of 2026. American Airlines recorded the highest mishandling rate, with 0.73 bags mishandled per 100 enplaned, totalling 251,976 mishandled bags.

The report, analysed by Global Work & Travel, highlighted that Envoy Air and United Airlines followed closely with mishandling rates of 0.72 and 0.66 per 100 bags, respectively.

In contrast, Allegiant Air had the lowest rate at 0.12 bags per 100, indicating significant variability in baggage handling performance across airlines.

Despite the high numbers, there is a silver lining for travellers. The overall mishandling rate has decreased from 0.52 per 100 bags in H1 2025 to 0.49 in 2026.

Travel expert Jürgen Himmelmann advises passengers to take precautions, such as photographing their luggage and keeping essential items in carry-on bags. "Take a clear photo of your suitcase and another of what's inside it," Himmelmann suggests, emphasising the importance of preparation.

The report also noted an increase in flight cancellations, with 85,998 scheduled operations cancelled in the first half of 2026, up from 1.57% in the same period in 2025. Himmelmann remarked, "Knowing what you'd do if your suitcase didn't arrive or your flight was cancelled is just as important as planning what you're going to do when you get there."
