Heathrow expansion promises 108,000 new jobs

Heathrow Airport has unveiled ambitious expansion plans that aim to create over 108,000 jobs across the UK, amidst ongoing discussions about the construction of a third runway. The expansion is positioned as a vital growth initiative to bolster the UK's global competitiveness. However, concerns have been raised about the financial burden on travellers.

Jason Geall, Executive Vice President of Global SME at American Express Global Business Travel (Amex GBT), highlighted the economic significance of Heathrow, stating, "Heathrow is a critical gateway that underpins trade, investment and long-term economic growth in every region of the country." He noted that the UK travel sector contributes nearly £300 billion to GDP annually, with Heathrow handling over £290 billion in cargo trade each year.

Despite the positive outlook on job creation, Geall questioned the financial implications of the expansion. "Heathrow has been the world's most expensive major airport for over a decade," he said, referencing the Civil Aviation Authority's analysis which suggests that charges could more than double, potentially adding around £60 to every return ticket. This increase could impact businesses, travellers, and the UK's global connectivity.

Geall emphasised the need for reform alongside expansion, advocating for terminal competition, competitive procurement, and independent scrutiny of spending. He concluded, "Growth and good value aren't mutually exclusive - but only if we get the model right from the start." The debate continues as stakeholders weigh the benefits of expansion against the potential costs to consumers
