TDM AWARDS - NOMINATE NOW!

Aalto Works, a collection of thirteen landmark buildings in Finland designed by modernist architects Aino, Elissa, and Alvar Aalto, has been added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. This prestigious recognition highlights the global significance of their work, which has shaped modern architecture and influenced design approaches worldwide.

The UNESCO designation was awarded at the annual meeting in Busan, South Korea, following a nomination by Finland's Ministry of Education and Culture. The Finnish Heritage Agency, in collaboration with the Alvar Aalto Foundation and ICOMOS Finland, prepared the nomination.

Five of the thirteen buildings are located in Helsinki, offering a unique insight into the Aaltos' human-centred approach to architecture. These include The Aalto House, Studio Aalto, National Pensions Institute (KELA), House of Culture, and Finlandia Hall. Helsinki's central location and public transport network make it an ideal base for exploring these sites.

Helsinki Mayor Daniel Sazonov remarked, "The inclusion of the Aalto Works on the UNESCO World Heritage List represents a wonderful and significant international recognition of Finnish architecture."

The Aalto Works sites demonstrate how design can support wellbeing, equality, and community life. Hanna Harris, Chief Design Officer of Helsinki, noted, "The Aaltos’ human-centred approach shows how design can enrich everyday life and shape the way we experience our surroundings."

This recognition not only honours the Aaltos' legacy but also positions Helsinki as a must-visit destination for architecture enthusiasts. The designation underscores the enduring importance of creating environments that support human wellbeing and cultural identity
