Pattaya has emerged as the leading domestic destination for Thai travellers during the upcoming Songkran festival, according to Agoda's latest accommodation search data. The digital travel platform reports that Hua Hin/Cha-am, Bangkok, Phuket, and Chiang Mai complete the top five destinations for the Thai New Year period, reflecting a preference for short-haul, accessible beach locations.
Pattaya's enduring appeal is largely due to its extended Songkran celebrations, including the famous Wan Lai festival, which continues until 20 April. Known for its vibrant beachfront atmosphere and large-scale water fights, Wan Lai attracts visitors even after the official Songkran dates of 13 to 15 April. This trend highlights Thai travellers' inclination to extend holidays beyond peak periods to avoid congestion.
Internationally, Songkran's allure draws visitors from across the globe. Agoda's data shows Malaysian travellers lead international searches for Thai stays during the festival, followed by India, South Korea, China, and Singapore. Among international visitors, Bangkok ranks as the top destination, offering a mix of traditional and modern festivities.
Akaporn Rodkong, Agoda's Country Director for Thailand and Indochina, noted, "Songkran is a time when travel feels a little more meaningful, whether it's reconnecting with loved ones or discovering somewhere new. Pattaya's position at the top spot reflects how travellers are drawn to destinations that offer both energy and familiarity."
Agoda's Songkran campaign, running from 1 to 18 April, offers a 10% discount on bookings for stays between 1 April and 28 June, encouraging travellers to explore its extensive range of properties and experiences
