The Alaska Travel Industry Association (ATIA) has announced the start of the 2026–27 aurora borealis season, offering new and unique ways to experience the northern lights. The season, which began in late August, is expected to last for seven months, providing ample opportunity for visitors to witness this natural spectacle.

Jillian Simpson, ATIA President and CEO, highlighted the appeal of this time of year, stating, "The nights are starting to get longer, but the temperatures are mild." She emphasised that locations like Fairbanks, situated under the auroral oval, offer high chances of seeing the northern lights on clear nights.

Several new attractions have been introduced to enhance the aurora viewing experience. The Oriona, a new 10-room property near Fairbanks, offers modern accommodations with facilities designed for aurora viewing, including an indoor lounge and outdoor deck. Guests can receive aurora alerts to maximise their chances of witnessing the lights.

Aurora Black Lorry Tours, a new operator in Fairbanks, provides private, small-group excursions in heated vehicles, ensuring comfort and flexibility. These tours are guided by locals who select viewing locations based on current conditions.

In Southcentral Alaska, Outbound Heli Adventures has launched an aurora viewing dome overlooking Knik Glacier. Accessible only by helicopter, this private experience includes panoramic views from a fully enclosed dome.

Snowhook Adventure Guides has expanded its offerings with a new lodge in Hatcher Pass, complementing its winter activities such as dog sledding and snowmobiling, all designed to enhance northern lights viewing.
